does anyone know where to buy the 6800 ultra 512mb, the top of line video card in canada, ive checked futureshop, canadacomputers, best buy and many other pc shops but i can't seem to find any, (not that im necessarly going to be able to afford it but) the supply of it seem really low and im wondering why such a good card has a low supply rate.

U cannot can buy a 512MB desktop card yet as no one has made them or sells them

However, you can try and buy a 512MB workstation card like the Quadro Fx 4400 or 3Dlabs..sumat sumat(I forget teh name) which also has 512MB on board memory.

im wondering why such a good card has a low supply rate.

It's scarcity of 1.6 ns GDDR 3 memory modules.

And BTW, a 512 mb 6800 Ultra doesn't exist. And if it did, it would easily cost more than US$1,000.

With some tweaking, the 6800 GT is more than capable. Search through the Doom 3 forum for more info.

how much longer do you ppl think it will be before they come out with 512MB video card.

I've heard that people are running into trouble on ultra quality settings in doom3 only while playing single player because of the size of the maps. It may have been here, or hardocp but someone posted some commands you could edit in order to improve your doom3 performance on ultra quality provided you had enough ram and fast enough hard drives (or something like that).

as far as 512 meg cards are concerned I think we'll see them relatively soon (within a year and a half to two years), there has been a huge push towards upping the amount of ram on any given card, fooling consumers into thinking memory is the only valuable part of a GPU (i.e. the 5200 with 256 megs of ram).

Quite some time, however 512mb cards are on both Nvidias and ATis roadmaps. There is nothing reall special about makeing a card with that memory, just the problem of getting the memory, manufacuting a small amount of cards, then haveing to sell it at a rediculous price just to break even. Once the price of GDDR3 comes down i bet they will push them out.
