hey if nations can skip olympics coz of their political views then an athelete should not be exempt from skipping a match for his personal convictions... no matter how wrong they may be...

methinks the point is, countries shouldn't skip olympics because of politics, and neither should the athletes. the olympics and politics should never be intertwined, the olympics should be about competition of men/women vs one another, regardless of political/religious belief. but, like all things, the oylmpics are tainted by common pettiness.

see people like michael phelps and ian thorpe I enjoy watching because they do whatever it takes to bring a medal to their teams :) and their team mates make moves to accomodate them (though am not sure phelps inclusion in the 4x100 is such a positive move coz of the guy they are replacing...)

/me thinks having players, countries refuse to compete soley because of the political orientation of the opponent, totally defeats/goes against the whole purpose of the olympics.

/me remembers back to the 1970s and how things were looked at with "beat the commies, etc..."

In all do fairness (and yes I see your point about nations refusing to enter for political reasons), if there is a policy in place as has been suggested; it would be fair/fitting for the rules committee to act within accordance to their policy wrt this...
