I am new newbie to Linux and I am having a problem booting Linux for the first time. Gathering from a few forums that I have visited, the problem may have to do with the chipset on my ASUS motherboard.

The problem: I installed suse 8.1 with no problem. I accepted all of the yast defaults. The installation was successful and I was prompted to reboot. I did so and the following message was displayed:

Error 28: selected item cannot fit into memory

I tried a totally new install and the same error message reappeared at the first boot. After some research on the internet I found that the problem may be the nvidia chipset on the motherboard. I was able to locate the appropriate drivers on nvidia's website and I need to ask a few questions before I proceed:

1. Will the above-mentioned drivers allow me to boot Linux, or is my problem due to another issue?

2. If I cannot boot Linux, how do I install the nvidia drivers?

Info about my PC:
- AMD XP2000
- (2) 40 gig HD's (Linux is on a partition of 26 gig on the 2nd HD)
- 614 MB Ram
- XP Native (both hd's are FAT 32)
- Asus A7N266 Motherboard

Any help would be appreciated. I will need a clear step-by-step explanation to implement any changes. PLEASE HELP ME GET LINUX RUNNING SO I CAN BREAK MY WINDOWS ADDICTION!!

Hmmm
I'm using S.u.S.E. 8.0 and it works perfectly, but you're using the new bootloader (GRUB) that comes with 8.1. That's a known issue of GRUB and nforce chips.
If the installer offers you a "thing" called LILO, choose it, that's the older boot loader, that worked fine.
have luck!

Oops, I forgot to say you don't need to reinstall nothing, Linux is not Windows, usually there is a option for repairings somewhere in the bootable CD.

how'd u guys get suse installed? since there's no cd image for it to install, and the only way i've seen was using the Live Eval then Yast, but i heard most linux doesnt have nforce drivers support yet so i was wondering how'd u get it to connect online to install suse. thanks! ^_^x

I installed suse with an installation cd borrowed from a friend.

Anybody out there that can help? I have heard that the error 28 problem can surface with the GRUB boot loader. How can I use LILO with suse 8.1?

the reported error should be fixed in the latest cvs version,
mail me, I could give you a boot disk-image.

cheers

I purchased the professional version.
The distro is very useful for professional purpuses, but may be a little scary for home users.
