View Full Version : Does anyone else notice a big diff btw "Quality" and "High Quality"?

With all other settings being equal, High Quality mode seems a lot better to me, but the performance drop is ridiculous. I can't even play UT2k4 ONS-Primeval at 1024x768 2xAA/4xAF without running 20-35 fps the whole time. Is this really what I paid $425 for?

Primeval is probably the most demanding map in the game. I guarantee your performance would be the same on a comparable ATI card.

Edit: Actually it would be better on the ATI card because you can't disable its optimizations like you can on the 6800.

Bah!

Besides that there is little to no difference between Quality and High Quality so there is really no reason to run HQ.

In looking at still shots I would agree with you guys... but when actually moving around in the game, there seems to be a lot more texture "twinkling" in the distance with the quality setting than with the high quality setting. Is this just my imagination?

I normally play at Quality (tri opts on, AF opts off) settings and I notice no such thing on my 6800 Ultra.

I have noticed too that High Quality is better. i even tooked identical screencaptures high quality vs quality and I didnt notice difference. But when moving around in games everything is more sharper and so on. Il-2 sturmovik give 35fps--->28fps drop when using high quality. Some games gives only very small performance hit (cpu bottlenecks).

I have only twice seen a diffrence, in Doom 3 and Thief 3 and even then only like under certain circumstances. I do use HQ tho since the the 6800 has enough horses to go full quality.

I've noticed texture shimmering ever since I got the GT. With my ol'9800pro optimizations caused texture banding, with the GT it's texture shimmering.
I dunno which is worse.

I would like to go back and compare to my 9800 pro but i already sold it...

One thing I have noticed is that super-sampling AA modes seem to reduce the shimmering, but 8xS is usually too much of a performance hit in most cases, so I'll probably use 4xS if I can figure out how to enable it in the driver CP

Why not try using Quality, then disabling Trilinear and/or AF optimizations and see if a combination gives you better performance but still gives you IQ you like.

helps i guess, but it butches my performance... after all isn't quality mode with no opts the same thing as high quality mode?

that's kinda low performance isn't it? I can run 1280x1024 with 8xaa/8xaf @ about 40-50 fps with quality.

edit: ok I just played on ONS-Primeval and I was able to get abot 38-55 fps with 4xaa/8xaf on High Quality mode @ 1280x1024.

yeah the weird thing is 3Dmark and Doom 3 are giving me almost exactly the same numbers as I'm seeing all over the web, but when it comes to UT, everyone is telling me "I get way better than that"

How???

Some of the UT2K4 maps are beasts on any card. ONS-Primeval, DM-Inferno, and DM-Icetomb come to mind - I don't even play those maps as they suck performance wise even on 800x600 unless you turn almost everything off. That being said, I did notice texture shimmering when using Quality on my 6800 GT (before I RMA'ed it). I noticed it easily in both D3D and OGL games. I switched to High Quality 4xAA/16xAF and that went away. FWIW, HiQ w/out Ops did look stunning. :D

I just stated in my previous post that i played on ons-primeval and had a prety constant frame rate in the 30s-50s @ 1280x1024 high quality 4xaa/8xaf.

Not shure why your ut2k4 numbers are low, did you remove aney old drivers before instaling the most recent?

Man, on my system, not OCed at all, with a GF4 Ti4400, I had everything in UT2k4 maxed and the game ran like a wet dream. I never had AA or AF on though, so maybe that's why?

That and also wouldn't it not run ps 2.0 (if there is aney I don't realy know) and default to 1.1.
