seems like the 6800's are gaining more ground in every new benchamark

Wait...the 6800 cards actually get better FPS out of the in-game benchmark, but lose in the pre-packaged benchmark? Strange...I wonder which of those benchmarks will be closest to real HL2 performance (since it seems the video test is based more on shader effects than anything else). Though you know this will just add more fuel onto the fire: "for good benchmarks get an x800, for good gameplay get a 6800", etc

I'm also very encouraged by their TI4200 results, 52 FPS at 1024x768 isn't bad at all, perhaps the game will be playable with 2xAA at those settings after all. Also it seems that most of the shaders look almost exactly the same in DX8 mode as they do in DX9, quite suprising, I was expecting most of the shader effects to be disabled in DX8 mode. Would sure hate to have an MX card though!

Those are the worst graphs I have ever seen. The x800 series is the way to go for this game, but I'm satisfied with GT performance.

They didn't gain any ground there; these benches are more or less the same as the others on the web. XTPE = ~70 fps, Ultra = ~56, GT and Pro = ~50 at 1600x1200 4x/8x.

no in most tests i have seen the ati800xt has beaten the 6800ultra but not in these tests as it would seem, the 6800u beats the x800xt in actual gameplay but not in the stress test

wait ill just have to double check that graph, yep the 6800 ultra pwns it in gameplay, well thats what i see when i look at that graph, what do you see ??

ati have been pwned in gameplay :P

Anyway mate when the actual game comes out, im telling you now it wont be running any less than 100 fps in hl2 in 16x12 on my 6800u, my pc smokes with this card, smokes i tell ya.

why do you need AA in 16x12 anyway ? its ridiculous. AA is overated

"AA is overated"

I beg to differ.

AA isn't overated.... in some games it is basically NEEDED :\.... especially looking at CS:S screenshots since it looks like the old CS with better looking water and some stuff with physics :\.

CS with AA makes all the difference in the world :)

Well, I would tend to agree that AA is somewhat overrated only in the following situation: 1600x1200 on a 19" monitor or smaller. Sure, there still is a difference but it is fairly negligible to most in that case.

OMFG!!!

Valve Stress Test:
1600x1200 4x/8x
All Options Maxed

61.77- 53.1FPS

Well, 10fps in that fps neighborhood is nothing to sneeze at. At 100+fps, sure, it's no big deal... oh and that is a ~19% increase (53 to 63) which is commonly recognized as a substantial gain by most people.

yeah as i said above anyone with a decent rig will be running hl2 in 100+ frames, thats my opinion. maybe not with 8xAA and 16xAF but hell when you run stuff in 1600x1200 AA doesnt really matter imo. maybe 2x or 4x at most

I'm happy as long as I can turn up the resolution and see the sniper at the end of the map and the aliasing isn't noticeable. I always try to keep my fps as high as possible when playing online. I don't want to get killed because my fps suddenly hit the crapper when something blows up in smoke in front of me when I'm trying to kill someone.

It's so damn obvious that 90% of those graphs show that the benchmark is CPU limited.
No i am not telling you how crappy 6800s are. They aren't. HL2 will run great on all new generation cards. Now could people stop throwing around stupid benchmarks. A benchmark shows the result the user wants to see. Look around on the net and you'll see that after long enough searching you find that benchmark that shows exactly the result you wanted to see.

And no AA is not overrated. Some games are horrible without AA.
If you'd say AA at 1600x1200 is overrated i'd tend to agree.

That's like saying "Anything above 1st gear is overrated"...

This benchmark is obviously biased towards Nvidia.

Why, you ask?

Because all the bars in the chart are GREEN!

I agree. I have no problem with turning off AA for 1600x1200. :)
