Man I am just really excited about this game, about 6 years ago I was a HUGE Destruction Derby fan, mainly the realistic vehicle damage, etc. I was also a pretty big fan of the Driver series. Now, although Flat-Out does not have a "bowl" style match from my understanding, it does have a few interesting gameplay modes, such as one mode where you must fling your driver out of the car, and try to hit a bullseye... interesting :)

The physics are incredible, the damage looks great, I played it at E3 in the nVidia booth and the graphics were stunning :) I am really looking forward to this game.

Check out this 28mb trailer! The damage and physics model is incredible! Parts of this trailer look near photrealistic:
Official Trailer Here (http://www.flatoutgame.com/videos/XBoxTrailer_FINAL_640X480_Compressed.mpg)

Its coming for X-box, PC, and PS2 in fall :) Really, the graphics I saw at e3 were amazing.

Looks pretty cool.... I will have to wait for a demo though since it might control for poop.

Cool, someone else has spotted this game, doesn't it look great eh? i think it's being developed by BugBear, the same people responsible for (the very playable) Rally Trophy, so the handling and physics are going to be top notch. :D

I haven't seen the trailer yet, time to download!

Oh man! so it is bugbear developing it, but bloody hell, this games looks pretty incredible in motion, and unbelievably hilarious with it's use of ragdoll physics! This game is going to be single most potent reason to wear you seatbelt in future. :D

I see what you mean about the photorealism in the middle section of the video, when you're on the bumper cam view and the ****pit view. This looks to be the best 'fun' racer on the pc in years. Roll on some kind of demo release.

At the end of that trailer, it says it has "Destruction Arena Mode" Maybe a destruction derby? Man I hope so that would be awesome :D

Wow, that trailer was amazing. I loved the Destruction Derby games. I had the original for PC (DOS baby!) and DD2 and DD: Raw for PSX.

Been looking at shots from bhmotorsports for a while now and it looks like to me someone applied USM on the first three shots in this thread. I think I can make out halos on many of the edges.

Going off-topic for a bit, Richard Burns Rally has gone gold. Whoo! :D

Some of those mini games looks amazingly fun lol.... wonder what the description is for some of them "Drive as fast as possible into the ramp, launching the person into a hole for points" :\.

[mongo mode]meee waaaanntt...[/mongo mode]

Another funny fact, is the German censored version of the game, the devs were forced to use Crash Test Dummys instead of humans.... LOL!!!

Some more SS's...

I think we've well and truly reached a point now where modern games look like (or better than) the CG of the mid 90s :D

It would be so cool if they could pull off those motion blurs in that trailer during the game. They give such a sense of realism to it.

Now if they could do a Carmageddon game based on this engine...:drooling:

08-24-04, 08:08 AM
oh hell yeah... carmageddon...

08-24-04, 12:00 PM
Hehe carmageddon 4 was recently announced too ;) That is gonna be awesome :D

Yeah, i hope its like 1 and 2. TDR 2000 sucked bad. The tracks seemed cramped and irritating. I still think the best part of the Carmageddon games was exploring the levels.
The underground military base (complete with nazis) at the school campus, the aircraft carrier with the hidden lower decks, powerups stuck on the roofs of buildings... awesome stuff :D

BTW, id love to see the "Giant Mutant Tail Thing" flying around with a modern physics engine. I cant wait :D

Also, my brother and I have been watching Flat Out for months... I cant wait to play this. I hope it has good multiplayer options on the PC. It seems the XBox version will have 4 player split screen and 8 player XBox live... but god knows what that means for the PC version. It probably wont have any multiplayer because MS said so :|

How cool would it be if EA made a mock up NFSU using the Flat Out engine?

ugh, i hate motion blur.. its always way overdone to the point its ilke your tripping.

Well, a real blur effect would be awesome. Other games just do a trail effect to simulate a motion blur effect and look like crap. So there hasn't been a game that could do a true motion blur like seen in those added effects for the video. If they could do it, 24fps would look as smooth a video. Though, doing a quick twitch turn in something like quake 3 would be a big blur, compared to rendering enough frames fast enough to make it appear smooth.

A good example of a blur is in the Rthdrbl or whatever demo. The spinning spheres have a nice realtime blur, but the more fps you have the less noticable it is because the position of each object in the next frame has a shorter distance between each other for the blur to be spread across.

Faster movement widens that gap and the blur fills it in. That's why without motion blurs, games look choppy at low fps compared to motion film that's silky smooth at 24fps.

It would be cool if someone redid that Destruction Derby game originally on the Playstation. It has some crazy maps with canyon races where roads were were almost a roller coaster. You'd be high up and suddently go down a steep road, near vertial, several 100 feet. And at the top at one side of the road had a bump, if you hit that you'd be flying down it. There was also that huge destruction arena shaped like a bowl for destruction. Man that game was fun. You actually drove in reverse the whole time in the destruction arena to avoid engine damage.

The announcer was great... Psygnosis was an awesome company :)

"You've blown your radiator!"
"Wow, total Destruction!"
