I ordered an NV Silencer 5 from www.frozencpu.com on Saturday, it arrived today. I rushed home, grabbed some tools, and prepared to give my card a sex change

After removing the stock heatsink, I noticed that eVga uses this terrible thermal pad that looks like its been used as a tampon numerous times... nah-ah... not gonna work for me. I tore that stuff off faster than a prom dress. Here is what I have:

http://img66.exs.cx/img66/1468/heatsink.jpg

I actually considered running it with just that heatsink to see what would happen, after a few seconds I realized that was a dumb idea. After ripping off the remaning heatsink, then cleaning off the gunk eVga likes to call "Thermal Grease," here is the card in its spread eagle nude shot:

Whoops... wrong picture there... here we go:

I finally fitted on the rest of the Vga Silencer and decided to let my dog see what kinda job I have done... Here it is in it's finished glory:

http://img66.exs.cx/img66/9184/IMG_0056.jpg

Yes, my dog Dusty is rolling on the floor laughing at the job that is ahead... modding the original bracket since Arctic Cooling decided to make my life hard. I grabbed some cutters, and started cutting, now I'm sure eVga would be thrilled if I ever had to RMA my card... job is done, my finished work:

Meh not too bad, at least it's straighter than most people in San Fransisco. :angel2:
Here is the back of the card, yes I added those lame heatsinks, it probably does absolutely nothing, but at least it looks cool in the odd situation that somebody would look at my video card:

Here it is inside my case...

Now for temps, it seems I'm getting about 1-2 degress C lower, I really need to do some more testing. Tonight I'm gonna see if I can play CS-Source at 450/1.2 without artifacting. That was a problem before. It is defenetly alot quiter, and it vents all the burning heat that I choose not to have in my case out, so, it works as a good hand warmer in the winter. I can feel my room heating up as I am typing this. Thanks for listening to my :lame: story.

:)

The End.

(Until I do some more testing CS)

Hi,
I just ordered one myself. Can you help answer some question?
How do you apply thermal compound of the gpu and memory? From the look of it, the gpu and memory share the same copper heatsink right? And does the heatsink contact with the memory without the thermal pad? I mean, do you need more thermal paste than the GPU?

Thanks!

it seems as if the memory does a great job of touching the memory even without thermal greese, but again, maybe its just cuz i went a little overboard on the tightening. I applied some AS5 on even amounts to both the gpu and memory

So you had to take off the black heatsink that covers the voltage regulators (at least I think that's what they are) near the 2 molex connectors? Does the NV5 blow any air over that area or cool them in any way? Was that HS just too tall to fit under the fan? Just curious....thinking about getting one of those bad boys.

I left the voltage regulator heatsink on, for the picture I pulled it off however, and applied some artic silver 5, then put it back on. It doesnt seem to blow any air on it, but the heatsink is still there, I'm glad for that :)

Cool. Did you have to remove all the tiny ass screws off of the top of the cooler before removing it completely, or are there instructions on how to do it?

I've got 2 6800Us, a PNY and a BFG. The PNY has a defective cooler and even after RMAing it they didn't do JACK **** to it. So I'm gonna be putting one on the card, but in my vain attempt to remove it before, I stripped one of the tinyass screws holding the plastic cover on.

OK, cool. I thought it would still fit by the looks of the pics I've seen.

yes, the tiny screws I had to remove to get to the larger screws that were underneath it..

Hehe very funny written. Nice dog btw!
Sorry to hear about that screw. You really needed a whole new one only because of that screw? Not replaceable?

jAkUp

Well... the problem is that its not really a screw, it was a thread that was connected to the heatsink, the thread broke in half when i tightened the nut down, I was gonna try and use it with just 3 screws, but i didnt realize 1 scew would make such a difference...

Ok the NV5 does in fact cool the memory also right? , because the specs of the cooler state that it doesn't. Except when you look at the copper contact it has memory contacts build in. I am just curious if it does infact cool the memory, also would this be a worth while upgrade from a Gainward 6800 GT Golden Sample. I just ordered one and will be getting the card soon.

Thanks

the screw breaking is apparently a common issue with this thing. I ordered one yesterday. Hopefully mine won't break :(

After installing mine today I ran into the same screw breaking problem. **** that, I remounted the stock cooler and I'm getting lower 55c idle and 74c load. I can live with that.
