Wow I thought there might be a bigger difference--- does this look right?

BFG GT OC stock
Aquamark 52305
3dmark 01 17583
pcmark 03 10889

BFG ULTRA OC stock
Aquamark 53174
3dmark01 17626
pcmaek03 11637

AMD 2500+ oc 220x11 (3200+)
1gig ocz 3200
480w

Is there a reason aqua and 3dmark01 scores are SO close?

Sorry for posting my scores like this- I don't care about having to best and fastest ULTRA/GT I just want to make sure nothing is wrong.

BTW I got both of these cards (1 for me- 1 for wife) and all be dang-- her COMPAQ wont take the GT---- Thats what U get for buying prebuilt-- It wont take the GT because it comes with a stock 200w PSU (wow what power) and for some reason the 200w psu has a connector with 2 little wires that go to the mobo (I fund out that it powers the hs fan) MY 350w psu I tried to put in didn't have the smaill wire-- didn't think much about it-- till I about SMOKED the CPU. I was leary so I didn't fry the CPU. Oh well shes back to the POS 9200se. Till I can figure something out for :ORDER: her.

Looks right to me as far as The GT and Ultra I dont see a real dramatic difference accept in price:) I am more than happy w/my PNY 6800GT clocked above ultra speeds:)

why not replace her psu with a better one so it takes the gt. Also the scores seems normal...@ 2500+ your most likely cpu limited.

for some reason the 200w psu has a connector with 2 little wires that go to the mobo

Those little wires were not on my spare 350w psu--- I'm guessing this is just a way that COMPAQ make you try to buy their replacement/upgrade parts. If this is the case (I'm done with them) That was the last computer we bought PREMADE- since the I have built 3 systems... I'm still a nOOB- but I'm trying for an old fart!

The Compaq I used to have came with a proprietary PSU, so no generally available aftermarket PSU's could be used. I don't even think I'll be able to use the damn case for anything, it's so Compaq-specific. Never again.

Your system is CPU limited now.
Especially in 3DMark 2001 the CPU is the limiting factor.
With the new GPUs this seems to become true also for 3DMark 2003.
My scores are about 20000 in 3DMark2K1 and about 65.000 in aqua on a P.4 3.2 not OC with Gainward 2600 GS at 430/1180.
If you look at scores of fast AMD64 CPUs they will be much higher then mine.

1# the diffrence in the cards are only the clock speeds, 2# yes you are heavily CPU limited.

Yeap in 3D mark 2001 i get 21k on a Radeon 9800.

Those little wires were not on my spare 350w psu--- I would just splice that 2-wire connector to one of the molex connectors on the 350w psu, or else connect the cpu fan directly to a molex.

Your 3DMK01 and 03 scores with the 6800 GT are virtually identical to what I've been getting.

like they said, ur scores are very cpu limited like mine which is why I am not bothering with a ultra right now, the GT suffices...

Thanks for all you advise and comments..... I'm very happy with the ULTRA.. It makes a world of difference from my old 9200SE (pos).

Question: I would like to know by just how much my system is "LIMITED". I mean what kind of increase can/could I expect with a amd64 chip... are we talking 5% 20% or---- with frame rates/game play... I know thats a pretty wide question- just looking for somewhat of an app. answer

What are your temps at those clocks, and are you using the stock cooler?

GT and the Ultra are basically the same thing :)

With the system listed in my Sig I am scoring about 13,700 in 3DMark03. I plan to top 14k when I install an OCZ Memory booster and get either some better timings or higher speed from my ram.

Also does the monitor have any bearing on the look of the graphics of a game? ie dpi

of .26 to lets say .21

would the game look better and if so-- a little or a lot?

Of course, the monitor plays an important role as to the quality of image you have.

Going to a .21 would be a nice jump in image quality.

We are talking 3dMark03 right?
Because who cares about PCmark when it comes to graphics!

Ok, speaking of speed, etc. I'm not sure if my 6800GT is running right or not. I know that it's CPU limited (because if I overclock my CPU it goes up by quite a bit). But at stock speeds, my P4 3.06ghz (I have Hyper-Threading enabled, and it's the older 533mhz FSB) and 512mb of RAM with the eVGA 6800 GT, I'm only getting 14k~ in 3dmark01. And no, that isn't a typo, 3dmark 2001SE... Though I get around 12k in 3dmark03. And I think it was 58k in Aquamark (though I'll have to run that again to be 100% sure.) But why is 3dmark01 so freaking low?

.21 or .26 in monitors is not as important as the quality of the screen itself:
Big screens ( 21' or higher ) usually have a higher value than a 15' or 17' screen, and the quality of it is what really makes it better for your viewing pleasure. ;)

I have a 21' CRT which is far "better" than my 17' CRT and 17' TFT. The 17' has a lower value than the 21' but i do prefer the bigger screen, unless you use it in a low res.
Also, don't make comparisons between these values in a CRT vs TFT comparison, these are "incompatible", dif products. ;)

Just make sure you see both monitors in action and make your decision by the image quality and not by the publicity and specs... Specs are always theoretical and probably will never be used in full, in most cases.
Some hardware will meet those numbers but most will fall short of them, so let your eyes make the decision instead of reading a lot of crappy info.
Info is important, but it's also made to sell their products, so beware.

Whatever your eyes tell you it's amazing today, will make you happy in years to come ( well...hopefully, hehe ), whatever the specs read. :D
