best replacement hs/f for a fx5800u

whats the best replacement hs/f for a fx5800u ? , i have a gainward fx5800u g/s and the fan is making a funny noise

Careful about replacing the 5800 Ultra fansink; it's not just for show. Unlike DDR and DDR3, those NV30 board DDR-II RAMs require some sort of heat sink. You take off the copper from a 5800 Ultra, you must use another RAM cooling solution or you'll kill the memories, dead.

I've tried just about every 3rd party video RAM air-cooling solution, and I've been looking for replacement RAM cooling on NV30 boards since December 2002. The only solutions I found are (a) the aluminum coolers from a dead 5800, or (b) the copper coolers from a dead 5800 Ultra.

I'm not going to force it on you, but are you sure what you're doing here? DOA 5800s with stock copperheatsinks are probably about as rare as V5 6Ks.

I think ricercar would agree with me that for you to have a working card outweighs his need to play with copper heatsinks?

I'm not in any hurry to "sell" this, so I'll let you two work it out.

ragejg: Tweakmonster BGA 1.0 RAMsinks were not good enough on my 5700 Ultra DDR-II, so I can't recommend them for the higher-clocked (hotter) 5800 Ultra DDR-II. There were artifacts in 2D, so I shut it down and never even tried 3D.

LOL- uh oh. I'm not shipping it to the UK for $5.00! If you'd like, PM me your address and I'll get the ship cost, but I'm guessing you can buy RAM Sinks there cheaper than I can send you these.

It was until I stomped it in frustration over it's DOA status and the seller jerking me around.

The RAM sinks are fine though. (the OTES got a bit bent by my foot of wrath) :lol2:

In retrospect, I really wish I wouldn't have stomped it, how cool would it have been to put the OTES gear on my 5800U and have a silent aircooled 5800U? The RAM on that OTES was 2ns 1GHz RAM, so it should be up for the job.
