View Full Version : Will dual cores be compatible with current nForce3 or VIA/SIS athlon64 chips?

Any of you experts know if the current athlon64 chipsets can maybe thru a bios update support dual core athlon64s? In fact would the intel 915 and intel 925 support dual cores too?

I can't imagine that they would. The technology is still a year off and I've got this feeling there is going to be need of of a larger die for the dual cores. I could be quite wrong though.

dual cores will be manufactured on 90nm process...there will be a lot area savinsg with that. Reason I ask is because the dual cores, each core will have their own memory controller and was wondering....how would that work wrt to the memory banks and memory modules itself?

Each core in Athlon 64 will have its own cache but only one memory controller between them. I don't remember who it was but some honcho at AMD said the dual core Opterons would be 100% compatible with current Opteron systems, and other than the 72bit memory width and extra HT links for dual cpus, there aren't many differences. I am willing to bet (5 cents to be exact!) that the dualcore Athlon 64 will be backwards compatible. A dual core cpu on skt939 should significantly outpace a dual core on skt754 (heaven forbid they even make one, but then why does a GFFX5200 exist) because of this...it should show the real performance gain expected of dual channel memory (you know, the one that isn't there right now for skt939).

It seems to me that AMD has had this planned out for many years. They definately have the architecture advantage atm. No matter what I believe a bios update will be in order.

Intel is a big question mark.
I really doubt they will do dualcore with their current platform because they're still using the northbridge to handle memory, etc.

ah ...shared mem controller...I hope i can plonk a dual core into a socket 939 should I get a mobo with s939.

as for Intel..IIRC, they do have dual and quad cores coming as just upping the core speeds isn't enough, as they have some problems with signal integrity between teh cpu and NB as clocks get higher.

Dual dothans I think it was being rumoured about from intel and their dual core strategy... I do not know about dual prescots? guess we will find out at IDF.

In some interview with an AMD guy he seemd to say that 939's are ready with a simple bios update.

He stated something like, users will just beable to put in a diffrent cpu and have two cores. etc.

It wasn't this article was it? http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1574332,00.asp
One of the most powerful things next year is going to be our dual-core product. To me, that's going to really shock the hell out of everyone, because it's going to be hardware-compatible, infrastructure-compatible, pin-compatible. I mean, people that have a 2-P system can slap in a dual-core product and end up with a 4-P system for the price of a 2-P. That's been the biggest drawback, everyone tells me. What keeps them from going from a 2-P to a 4-P system? It's price.

I am rather interested in this as well. I know the article follows the Opteron, though if the same was said about AMD FX and 939, I'd like to find out where. I plan on purchasing a Socket 939 nForce 4 SLi mobo soon after they debut. :drooling: Having the ability to upgrade to a Dual Core "Toledo" down the road would be even better! :drooling: :drooling:

Thats funny, the same thing crossed my mind! :)
Those things are going to fly off the shelves.

lol...

I was certain that I was the only one with that thought... darn. :D Ya, I agree with ya. They are gonna have one hell of a time keeping these things on the shelves. I've already recommended my buds follow suit, I know 7 of us are gonna be some of the first kids on our block with these things... hehe. :D

Can't wait... :drooling: :drooling: :drooling:

The very thought of this has me quivering in the nether regions.

It's likely the Socket 939 infrastructure cna handle Dual Core Athlon 64's as seen by the fact that Socker 940 can handle Dual Core Opteron's on the 90nm process. It will be interesting to see what kind of performance benefits we get from these processor, though we will have to see threaded programs likely to be able to benefit from this also of course like was said a BIOS update will likely be required.
