I am having a major problem trying to use the latest nvidia drivers on SuSE 8.1.

No matter how I attempt the installaion (yast online update, rpm, srpm, tagr.gz) the results are always the same. The installaion appears successful, but when I re-boot and it tries to load X, the login screen doesn't load completely and totally hags the system. I see the nice nvidia splash-screen, but after that things go wrong. The mouse is dead, so is the keyboard.

Boot to text mode instead of the graphical login screen. When your bootloader comes up, edit the kernel command line, so that instead of reading as "linux", for example, it reads "linux 3".

With lilo, you can do this just by selecting the "linux" entry (if that's what it's called), hitting the space bar, and the 3 key, and then hitting return.

With grub, I'm not sure. I'd think there would be a way to edit the command line, but I'm not sure what it is. Maybe 'e' (edit the command line)?

Once you're at runlevel 3, log in like normal, and then do a startx to, well, start X. ;)

When X fails, post the log file, /var/log/XFree86.0.log

Hmm... OK... nothing seems wrong there.

Maybe backing off the AGP rate in your BIOS might help? Or using NvAgp instead of agpgart?

Or what about changing Protocol "auto" or whatever it is to Protocol "IMPS/2", since autodetecting the mouse protocol was the last thing the log file was doing?

Which motherboard chipset is this, btw?

Thanks, I'll have a go with those suggestions later.

I am using an Asus Via-based motherboard KT133 (I think) with a 1GHz Athlon.
