Why Radeon? Get a 6800. For brands get an evga so you can stepup later to a more powerful card. Back to you question my radeon 7000le I got for 5 dollars has the best bang for the buck I've found yet :lol2:

He's not asking for any card, he is asking for a Radeon card. So don't try to question that or change his mind.

On topic, the X800 Pro is a very good card with a decent price. Also, the current 9800 Pro which can be found for less than $200 offers amazing value for money.

I'd say a 9800 Pro as they can be found for under $200 now and can play all the new games real well.

You might want to look more at the X800 series, as a 9800 pro would certainly show some performance increase over the 9600xt, but it wouldn't be anything amazing.

i don't have the Radeon 9600XT. I am still trying to find a good ATI card to get for my new system that i have to rebuild because i killed the other one.

What if i got a 9800SE and did a softmod to it. Which would be best?

X800 pro Vivo seems a great card. After a bios flash it turns out to be a X800 XT PE. If you do not want flash but performance out of the box the x800 is a reasonable good card.

If you really want a good bang for the buck you might want to consider a 9800pro

I'd get a 9800 Pro and then mod it to an XT. Just make sure you get the right kind of 9800 Pro. Check out the pictures and method here:

Good luck,

I would only consider X800 Pro Vivo as best bang for the buck , if you can flash it to X800XTPE :drooling:
For Nvidia series GT would be best bang with 50/50 chance of OC to Ultra and beyond.

I would say the X800 pro VIVO and flash it to a XT ,bcause on certain brands you will have no problems at all.

It not very wise to buy Radeon 9800 SE, Pro or XT now or by next month, do not bother think about get it because next month when $150 Geforce 6600 will be on sales and then Radeon 9800 SE, Pro and XT will be worthless to get and priceless. Geforce 6600 is very wonderful killer card for $150 that can overclock like insane big enough to slaughtered more expensive 9800 XT in every benchmarks plus it got PS 3.0. :)

Chevyman, your radeon bang for the buck search will only lead you to the ~ $400 pricepoint at the moment... Last gen PS2.0 hardware is definitley not worth the money at the moment for most...

What's the reason for specifically wanting a radeon? HL2/CounterStrike Source?

Definatly the x800 PRO VIVO. They can be 16 pipeline enabled in all cases.
Most do XT PE clocks as well.

Shh...they having a fire sale on 9600xt's right now if you can find em :P

If you are looking for a X600-style upgrade, its worth it.

9800 pro/xt is a good price/performance.

x800 VIVO RULES. almost 100% softmodable.

i got MSI's new 9800Pro. I have had a chance to play with it yet but so far the card is sweet. I got it from newegg. Here it is: RX9800PRO-TD128SP (http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=RX9800PRO-TD128SP&class=vga)

The success rate of that varies, I'd advise against it. Get a Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb (256bit memory bus) for about $200.

If you can't afford $200 and want a Radeon, then I recommend the Radeon 9600XT which sells for about $130. It's pretty decent, performs nearly on par with a Radeon 9700 Pro in most situations, and has nearly the same hardware capabilities as the Radoen 9800 Pro.

Woohoo! I was just about to throw in my 2 cents and tell you to get a 9800 Pro, too. :)

I couldn't find that card you linked to at newegg - how much did you spend? The 9800 Pros are still bargaintastic, and that bundle you got with it is sweet!

I have successfully soft-modded my 256MB Sapphire Radeon X800 Pro into a X800 XT PE but I wouldn't buy one to do it now. ATI has probably caught on. Just wait awhile for the Radeon X800 XT which slightly slower (500/1000) and you'll be able to overclock it past X800 XT PE specs! It'll be more affordable and still be good for 2 years or more. :drooling:
