Wow, I've regained a little faith in the MTV crowd. That really is encouraging.
so close to election day, i'm sure this isn't the last thing like this we will be seeing... i'm getting to the point where i just can't wait until it's over, lol.
good, it's a dang music awards show not a political rally. And another thing, there not to bad looking.
Ya that is what I thought their reaction was gw186. I bet most that were booing just didn't want to have a political campaign thrown down their throats when they just wanted to be entertained. Either way this back fired on Kerry.

haha, i just said that in a diff thread... bush and kerry both have some pretty hawt daughters :o

MTV for a very long time has beaten people over the head with the importance of voting. I imagine Senator Kerry's daughters were there to reinforce that message, and of course plug their father's candidacy.
Either way, booing is pretty rude. The least they could have done was remained quiet and not clapped at the end (when only 1 or 2 people clap, it makes people notice...). By the way, don't think for a moment that I wouldn't have said this had it been President Bush's daughters that were boo'ed.
matt spins a nice tale :)
they boo'd pretty much everybody in that segment... the kerry daughters were not an exception and the boo'ing was not half as bad as he makes it out to be  was at worst a 50/50 split
very spindiferous matt... very spindiferous indeed :rofl

It was stupid to have them there in the first place. I agree with gw186, that stunt had no place at an awards show. I applaud the audience for sticking up for themselves and seeing past that BS.

Why did they wholesale boo everybody? Were they all just a bunch of drunks in the crowd to be unaware that they were contradicting their own booing? :D
I don't disagree that it was stupid ninja... and I can't fault the audience for boo'ing to get their pop stars on the stage :) but it was an initiative that MTV took to get voter's involved...
I guess they don't realise the MTV crowd is swayed more by what P'Diddy and Usher and co wear than they are by the issues of today :)

voting is very important indeed, i don't think it's the civil thing to do to boo anyone, regardless of the relavence to the show.
if politics are such bs, then why would you put so much emphasis on them as to spend your spare time here in the political forums?
once you get a voice that can be heard, you should definitely voice it; there's nothing wrong with mtv trying to promote that, though you may disagree with their methods the concept is honorable IMO.

Wow, you sure are assuming a LOT there, Kamel. I never said that people shouldn't vote or that politics are BS. Staging an event to get ignorant voters to vote for one particular candidate is BS, and I was pleased that the audience didn't eat it up just because it was sponsored by MTV. I strongly encourage would-be-voters to educate themselves about the candidate's platforms and vote according to their beliefs. I strongly DIScourage MTV and the Kerry campaign from trying to get free votes from a bunch of clueless teenagers who just want to see a pop concert. Given the fact that MTV's audience is largely a bunch of bandwagon-hoppers, I was pleased to see them show a little spine for once.

It was an initiative MTV took but in the interests of getting their fans to vote for John Kerry, not to educate themselves and make an informed decision. It was too one-sided. However, your last comment is dead on - and maybe that was the only reason they boo'ed it, who knows.

The left would have you think that such a thing isn't possible. But of course, shaving with Achem's (sp?) razer is a dangerous thing.

if you've watched mtv at all you would know that mtv does not try to persuade you to vote for either party, they just want you to vote at all. IMO this could have just as easily been bushes daughters they put up on stage... the same message would have been sent as far as mtv is concerned.
The Bush daughters were there only via a pre-recorded remote broadcast. MTV is not altruistic, check out their website and tell me that they don't show their hand. ;)

sorry, i really don't know what altruistic means...
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)"
Altruistic \Al`tru*is"tic\, a. [Cf. F. altruiste, a. See
Altruism..]
Regardful of others; beneficent; unselfish; -- opposed to
egoistic or selfish. --Bain. -- Al`tru*is"tic*al*ly,
adv.
"WordNet (r) 2.0"
altruistic
adj : showing unselfish concern for the welfare of others [syn: selfless]
[ant: egoistic]
from this, it seems that it means unselfish, thus "not unselfish" should mean selfish? how is mtv selfish?
sorry, i don't visit their website, as i just watch their tv programming. their advertisment is "choose or loose", and they have a list of things on the site saying:
* Learn More About the Candidates and the Issues
* Where is the Rock The Vote Bus This Week?
* Enter the MTV|2/Urbanworld PSA contest
* Youth Venture and MTV Award 20 Grants for 'Get Out The Vote' Efforts
* Join a Rock the Vote Street Team
* Choose or Lose en Espanol
* Check out the Choose or Lose Bookstore
on how to vote "smart" (they are links).
i don't see this as mtv supporting one or the other, trying to get people to blindly vote. quite the opposite actually, they are encouraging the people who watch their tv programs to investigate the election on their own and figure out who they support in the election, then to vote for that candidate. their emphasis was to get people _to_ vote, if you can't see that then you are truly a scientific anomoly (not you as in directed at anyone, but you as in insert any person here).
btw, sorry if i misunderstood the description of your word... i didn't really understand by the definition, lol

They also booed the Bush daughters when they appeared. People don't like politics in awards shows...period. Remember back to Michael Moore's speech? Some of Hollywood's most liberal celebs were there, and they still disagreed with turning the event into a political show.

If they're showing any hand right now it's for the GOP. The only mention of either party on their main page aimed at voting teens (MTVu) is a link to the essay a teenager will be presenting at the GOP convention this week. If you've seen the commercials MTV has been playing about voting, they also show no preference for whom you vote. They are just attempting to get kids out to vote.
Also the main link on their Choose or Lose website is for coverange of the RNC.

Thats not quite accurate. When the taped video of the Bush daughters showed, yes, there was a few booos, but drowned out by other applause and the boos were almost not hearable. With the Kerry dauthers, there was a definite amount of boos that were heard quite well over the much smaller amount of whistling and stuff. But, very well could be that the audience jsut didnt want to hear any more politics.

thats not quite accurate either... MTV reduced the audience vol so as to allow the viewer to hear the bush sisters speak...
the reaction was not an anti-kerry or anti-bush one (unless you believe Matt and subsequently rush limbaugh) but rather one of getting em off the stage coz they wanted to see the show...
it has happened before for various message related segments @ the MTV awards where the young audience just doesn't want to get into it and wants to see their icons prancing round..
no matter what happens... neither the bush nor the kerry sisters are gonna be pop icons anytime soon :)

From the CNN article:
MTV's broadcast turned down sounds of the audience during the playing of the video, but the vocal audience could still be heard.
The Bush twins are 22 years old. Vanessa Kerry is 27; Alexandra turns 31 on Sunday.
The boos seemed to die down and cheers took their place toward the end of the segment, when the Kerry daughters took back the floor and encouraged people to support victims of Hurricane Charley, which devastated portions of Florida earlier this month.
They weren't booing either set of twins for who they were, the booing was for the politicizing of the event. Each set of twins stated they hoped people would vote for their father, that's what set off the booing.

they are very talented, they can yell louder :lame:
i have not surveyed every person who boo'd to ask them why they did indeed boo, so i am not qualified to make that acessment. i will say, however, this shows bad sportsmanship by any group when they boo, i don't care if it's for kerry, bush, or ross perot.
also, who's to say that kerry might not have more followers, just ones that aren't so rude? this was an attempt by the people of the stadium to suade someone's opinion based on popular demand, which is worse by the voters themselves than mtv showing anyone on stage, no matter who it is. i'm sure bush's daughters would have gotten boo'd pretty bad if they had made a speech at the 400,000 protest against the republicans convention. just saying it's all a matter of the audience, and people should not be so rude as to conduct themselves in such an activity.
