On the 2880 driver download page, there should be md5sums listed for the file you have downloaded. Run md5sum NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2880.tar.gz and compare the output with the posted md5sums. If they're different, that might cause this problem -- redo the download.

You are extracting as root, so those "operation not permitted" errors seem very, very strange... Is there an NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2880 directory already in the directory you're in when you run this tar? If so, you might want to remove it and try again...

Those error messages i remember all toooo well from my old machines with less RAM than today and small temporary disk space. Especially when i was trying to install from a CD. Could you
tell something more about your computer, partitions and ram?

If you get such errors installing from a CD make sure that your CDs and drive are very clean, sometimes it causes read errors.

Also, be aware that there have been several driver releases since 1.0-2880 - the current version is 1.0-3123.
