the card i have now is the geforce fx 5500 OC and i have a mobo that only supports agp 4x. now if i had a mobo that supported 8x would my card perform better? would there be a noticable jump in performance in games like doom 3 or farcry?

Not even that.

Actually it helps a lot. The games are more smooth if you have AGP8x, especially Doom 3.

Only if you are running it in a higher texture setting than you have the video ram for.

Honestly, don't change the mobo just for agp8x. There is less than a 1% difference (performance wise).

There was about a 2-3% difference between 2x and 4x... so you can imagine 8x?

There is virtually NO difference between 4X AGP and 8X AGP. The AGP bus is not the bottleneck at this time. It will be quite a while before video cards exceed the bandwidth capabilities of 8X AGP. It should occur in the next two or three generations of cards. By then, PCI-Express will be the standard.
