View Full Version : Audio supercomputer hidden in your graphics card?
Cambridge (MA) - Nvidia's graphic cards may have much more to offer than simply drawing pixels on the screen: A startup company has found a way to translate audio signals into graphics, run them through the graphics card and overcome a common issue of limited audio effect processing performance in computers.

A new home for Soundstorm perhaps? If you want it then you'll need to make sure you get an nVidia Graphics card. Might be worth it though.

When I worked for NVIDIA, we had some meterologists gang together 16 Quadro FX 1000 cards, for parallel-processing weather computations in OpenGL. It was fascinating.
thats pretty kewl :)
doing all the work on one discrete product sounds good to me

It seems like a cool idea, however i do wonder why dont sound cards already do this?
Eg someone sould come up wiht an api kinda like OpenGL or something but for audio that is focused towards mixing/producing music. So then they can have acclerated mixing or whatever that program dose. However i thought 'soundcards' were saposta do that anyways oh well.

A soundcard is basically just a DSP with accessories. Any floating point processor can handle that kind of computation (as long as it has appropriate drivers).
Hmm, so maybe someday, we'll see a "Geforce Audigy" which outputs both audio and video! Heck, why not throw a network card on there while we're at it. Oh wait, they already have that, it's called an Nforce ;) . Anyway, interesting stuff...
