...Now you're just nit-picking.

Not really.

It is a fact that limo's and Town Cars get the same or worse mileage than the average SUV.

So it is sort of hypocritical for these politicians and activists to crusade against SUV's while they burn up 14mpg in a limo, or worse yet, burn up 7,000 gallons of fuel in a single private jet flight...

nit picking ??? this is the same guy who tries to shove his enviromentalist policies and agendas down evey ones throat. He really should practice what he preaches.

I'm definitely not a car specialist, but doesn't a Lincoln Towncar get about 15-20 miles per gallon of gas? If that is the case, my wonderful 1994 Oldsmobile gets something like 30 miles per gallon, so although there is a pretty good difference in terms of efficiency, it's not exactly like he's driving some huge SUV that consistantly gets less.

No comment on the private jet, though. That's one part where you're absolutely on the mark.

Fuel economy ratings (city/highway):

Town Car - 17/25
Saturn VUE AWD V6 - 19/25
Lexus RX330 - 18/25
Lincoln Aviator V8 - 13/17

The Town Car is equal to most midsize SUVs. Regardless, it's not like he was driving a Toyota Prius or any other economically minded vehicle.

From the MSN Autos page on the 2004 Lincoln Town Car:

Fuel Economy (city / highway): 17 / 25 mpg

Those are not at all bad stats for a V8. My Grand Prix's V6 gets about 19 / 30 to give a comparison.

*edit*

Sat beat me to it.

My Ion gets 26/35, and most of my car's parts and body can be recycled. Does that make me a tree-hugging hippie?

Actually now that I've watched the video again, it dawned on me that the car Gore is driving is not a Town Car, but rather a Lincoln LS.

The LS has two engine options, V6 and V8. The V8 is identical to the one in the Town Car and gets the same mileage, but the V6 gets 20 / 24, so if Gore was driving the V6 model it really isn't doing too bad on gas mileage, especially for a luxury sedan.

Well practicing what one preaches, or walking the talk isn't exactly the most common pass time when it comes to politicians...

BTW, an older (1994) car might not be getting the same gas mileage it did when it was new. As gunk and carbon deposits build up in the engine, it can decrease gas mileage some. It can also have some other effects on performance as well... Cleaning the fuel injectors and what not periodically can help though...

You're right, it's a Lincoln LS.

But I have to correct the other part :D

The V8 Lincoln LS uses a 3.9L all aluminum engine. It gets 280HP with 17/24 MPG. It's the same motor the 2002-2003 Thunderbird and Jaguar S-Type use (thought the Jag's is bored over to 4.2L). What's funny is the S-Type gets 18/28 MPG from the larger engine with 294HP

3.9L 280 hp V8
280HP @ 6000 RPM
286ft/lbs @ 4000 RPM
18/28 MPG

The Lincoln Town Car uses a 4.6L 239HP V8 that uses an identical long-block to the Mustang GT. It gets 17/25 MPG

4.6L 239 hp V8
239 @ 4900 RPM
287 @ 4100 RPM
17/25 MPG

But lets think about this. If he's going to spew out the enviornmental rhetoric, why isn't he driving a Passat TDI? Leather, 5 speed automatic. All the same creature comforts with 34/46 MPG.

I'm not sure about the car's respective weight, though I'm assuming the Town Car might be heavier (more weight to move about). Couldn't that account for the gas mileage differences somewhat there? Also sports cars are traditionally designed to be a bit more aero-dynamic...

The Town Car uses numerically lower gearing. Coupled with the peak horsepower coming on at a much lower RPM you can tweak the car to get pretty decent gas milage.

Ah yes you're right about the engines part. Alas, I'm a bit more educated in GM engines than in Ford and its derivatives.

I don't deny it's a rather large contradiction for Gore to be driving a car that's not quite eco-friendly, but then again it's not uncommon for politicians to say one thing and do another.

Use www.fueleconomy.gov, they give a completely unbiased comparison of cars in terms of gas mileage, emissions, and total cost for gas (e.g. based on what kind of fuel it takes.)

Police Officer: Are you the AL Gore I think you are?
Al Gore: yes, I am that sore loser.

Pretty humorous the report keeps harping on "if only Al Gore had won the presidency 4 years ago, he wouldn't have been in that situation."

Keep in mind that EPA MPG ratings are usually grossly inaccurate. Most cars never get nearly as good of mileage as advertised. The EPA doesn't drive the cars to get real world numbers, it is all done on a treadmill in a lab.
Highway MPG is still rated at 55MPH too btw. Yeah, that's real world.
