saw this interesting article.. about SUpercomputers..

http://www.gearbits.com/archives/000350.html

take a look a the fastest 500 SUpercomputers in the world.. :)

here.. fastest 500 (http://www.top500.org/sublist/index.php?vendor=%25&country=%25&app=%25&seg=%25&archtype=%25&sysfam=%25&procarch=%25&procfam=%25&region=%25&rank_from=1&rank_to=500&limit=40&output=default&date=2004-06&q=&submit=Generate+Sublist)

Nvidia servers rank #437 there..
the fastest Supercomputer is from NEC in Japan.. 35.86 teraflops per second. :drooling: and earth all conditions simulator the third faster for comparisons is from the famous USA ALamos Labs with more than 8 thousands Hewlet packards processors  albeit if they used ATlonsFx 64bits they will get that place with half of their processors .the supercomputer cluster used for LOrd of the RIngs movie ranks #80 there.. :)

wonder what kind of games we will see with those speeds if Personal Computers were that fast :D i saw slides sometime ago about Nvidia predictions in 10 more years how faster our PC's will be. i think those were 100mhz cpu's .. or something of the like .. kewl.. :D

hey thats your University? impressive for an university :)

a side note there experts that believe video cards will cease to exist in the future ,once CPus are fast enough to handle everything alone. but there are others that think that GPus will replace Cpus.. once they are used in multi sli combination. :)

i take some classes on and off @ the moment here.. :)

my wife was doing her doctorate there...

her department is full of apple based computing solutions with the media centers being dual cpu g5's with 23" cinema display's... very nice but they all have the one button mouse crappola :(

I think some uni's in california have similar setups :) they generally have a lot of money...

Won't happen any time soon. Maybe in the sort of 10 years time frame we might start to see something like that, but bear in mind that at the moment GPUs can't handle a LARGE amount of the stuff a CPU needs to do - interrupt handling, massive context shifting and such-like. Also, bear in mind that for a CPU to replace the GPU it'd have to do a LOT more work than it currently does - top end NV40 is capable of roughly 40 Gigaflops, where the P4 3.4 (or top end AMD 64 for that matter) can only pull about 9 at absolute tops. Gotta wait to see how good load balancing gets for parallel processing. Once that's established we'll have a far better idea of what sort of stuff the future might bring.
