View Full Version : I was wrong...
I've hated every other ID title and wasn't looking forward to Doom 3 at all. But a friend brought it over to see what it looked like on my new 6800 GT (he's playing with a 9800 Pro), and forgot to take it home when he left. So this weekend I started fiddling with it, and once I saw that I could play on High Quality @1600x1200 w/4xAA & 8xAF, I thought I'd give it a go and see what all the hype was about...
And there went my entire weekend! The character interaction, PDAs, audio logs, video disks, surround sound, etc., make it extremely immersive. Unlike Doom 1 & 2 there's a story, and you can't just sprint through every level blasting anything that moves, because you have to sneak around and examine every room thoroughly with the flashlight.
Yes, its too dark, the controls are too simple (no lean, no prone, no melee attack or scopes on any of the weapons, etc.), and so on, but the HORRORS I've seen...damn this game is great! Way better than I expected. I'm gonna give my friend back his copy and fork over $50 of my own just to support ID for making this sick and disturbing piece of art. I haven't liked a FPS this much since HL.
no melee attack?
come on man :D
smacking an undead to death with the torch (flashlight) is the most satisfying feeling after smacking one to death with a crowbar :D
other than that the game is pretty decent... compared to the hype I was not blown away but by itself in hindsight the game has many elements that work and thats what matters @ the end...

I think he meant you can't use every weapon as a melee weapon, only the flashlight, fists and chainsaw.
I know what he meant :)
I was j/k in the post
also I love the torch and bashing people's heads in with it lol...

Yes, I've used the flashlight, but I mean I should be able to smack them with the butt of my shotgun too.
You're probably right that it doesn't equal the 4 years of speculation and propaganda that preceeded it, but in my case, I paid no attention to any of it because I knew it would suck (like the other Dooms did). So I'm just glad to be proven wrong. :)

Yeah considering 99% of the fighting is close-qaurters a melee attack would have been nice. Sometimes I think that they didn't think this game through fully, which is amazing for its long dev time. Maybe they spent too long making it look dark and eerie.
(no lean, no prone, no melee attack or scopes on any of the weapons, etc.)And thank **** for that! I would have been disappointed if there was lean and.. prone?! Sure, they would be real useful :D.
Yeah considering 99% of the fighting is close-qaurters a melee attack would have been nice. That's what the shotgun is for, dude. I'd much rather whip out my shotgun than be 100% point blank with my machine gun or something. If they get so close that the chainsaw or the fists was an option, I know I've done something wrong. Regardless, it's not exactly hard to dodge the little critters when they're close to you. It's not like you can't move about.
I'm also glad there are no lean keys. It would ruin the feel of the game, and make it too complex. I just want to strafe around a monster and shoot it.

Yeah who needs a melee attack if you can unload 12 gauge buckshot into the demons cranium. :lol2:

who needs a prone button in d3? it would make it just that much easier for them to beat yer ass. i really would have like a kick button, though. that would have been cool to kick a demon back to buy you enough time to get yer shot gun, or kicking those damn trites like a soccer ball.

I actually find the prone button pretty useful in multiplayer since visibility plays a role. I agree that a kick button a la Duke Nukem would be awesome.

Hey.. don't knock the torch... it's cool. specially when you go to talk to someone but ur a little too far away and you end up crackin them over the head like my flatmate did.

Try that with the Cherubs on vet or nightmare...
I said "lean" specifically because I see the zsec zombies doing it to me! So a rotting corpse can peek around a corner and fire one off, but a fully-trained futuristic space Marine can't?
The reasons for "prone" are obvious; it reduces visibility and makes fire more accurate. But I assumed the monsters/NPCs were like those in other games; if you make noise, they see you/your light, etc., they know you're there and will attack. But I tested that assumption out last night and I was wrong. The monsters are apparently triggered automatically when you enter a given area, meaning they don't need to "see" or "hear" you or your flashlight to know you're there. And judging by the weapons in this game, accuracy isn't affected by anything. So "prone" would make no difference.
I've changed my mind about the dark thing too. Its too much. Again, a Marine should be able to handle a weapon and flashlight at the same time, and with all the cutting-edge tech at this base, they would've surely developed a helmet/goggles with NV. Regardless, I found the "Varilight" mod and its tolerable, so I'm using it.

Ok, lets have a lesson in math real quick
Flashlight
+ Hell Knight
One dead soldier
Try that with the Cherubs on vet or nightmare...Already have (finished it on Veteran). Of course, you do get hit sometimes. But what's that got to do with your choice of weaponry? I'd still prefer a shotgun over a melee weapon. And yes, you can still dodge them...
Thats what i like in id games ..they are direct & simple (for controling) ..& the graphics above all of course .
I'm replaying it right now & still enjoying every second :)
my objectives :
1) Enjoying the graphics @1600x1200 . (instead od 1024x768 in the first play)
2) Unlock every storge cabinet in the game :p
3) Minimal use of the shotgun
4) find every secret place
my objectives :
1) Enjoying the graphics @1600x1200
I'm spending as much time doing that as actually playing. :)
