**EDIT** Just noticed you can download a version which doesn't have the control center, and thus doesn't require .NET framework.

Which one will you download? I have .NET installed but for some reason I think I'll just stick with "old reliable" and go for the regular CPL version.

cool. :D i downloaded both versions. question: how do you know if you have .Net installed (ie, is it a part of sp2)? and what are the benefits of the new control centre?

You can always go to windows update and see if .NET shows up as a download for you. That's one way to tell. Also, you can check your user accounts and see if there is one called asp.net machine account. If it's there, you have .NET.

The benefits of the new control center? It looks kinda cool. I don't know for sure but I think it'll hold profiles for individual games. Try it out and let us know. :)

I'm curious to see if there are any performance differences between them.

ah, thanx, but i think i'll wait awhile, and just try the regular cats for now. :D

They claimed an increase in OpenGL performance in their 4.9s, that would be released at the beginning of September, but it doesn't seem to be present in THESE drivers. I would like ATi a lot more if they didn't talk such bollocks and promise what they never ****ing deliver.

In other news, ATi have just announced that they are working on a Digital Vibrance-esque feature for their cards (honestly, they really have). But that's probably more bollocks, as they're 'so busy' working on increasing OpenGL performance and decent Linux support.

ATi are starting to annoy even me, which is fairly difficult to do. :lame:

.net 1.1 is an update available through win update...

go there and check out through custom updates for sp2... I haven't used sp1 but I assume that win update has .net 1.1 as an update available...

.net 1.1 is available as a Windows Update in winXP SP2 and was in winXP SP! as well... I forgone the installing of it...largely I haven't needed it, and if it's not needed it could potentially be another possible security vulnerability into the system. I don't throw such things on, unless I have a use...

I guess it's time to grab some drivers then...

I gave up on ATI drivers around 8 months ago

According to their release notes they have improved Doom3 for X800 so thats techincally an increase in OpenGL perfromance :)

They've been promising decent OpenGL performance for roughly two years now, and specifically promised it for this release. I went through their release notes with a fine-tooth comb (not literally, that would be silly), and they have not delivered. An increase in Doom 3 performance on their new architecture is far from being the same. I guess I wouldn't mind, really, if they hadn't announced that they WOULD improve OpenGL performance, and that it WOULD be in this release.

Hint for ATi: Don't lie to us, don't bull**** us, and don't make promises you cannot deliver upon.

Ehh I have had a R9700 Pro three weeks after it first shipped. I know first hand how "bad" their OpenGL perfromance is. However I have had no real perfromance issues in any of the OpenGL games I have played on it (COD, Q3, SOF2, JK2/3, MOHAA, ect). Granted its not as fast as NV in OpenGL games, but Doom3 was first game I had to really turn down the IQ to get decent perfromance. And considering the 9700 Pro is almost a 2 year old card, thats acceptable IMHO.

I'm not dismissing their 'acceptable' OpenGL performance, as I have also run these games acceptably. But ATi have been promising a huge increase for years, which increasingly seems to be a flagrant lie (they're approaching Gabe Newell Credibility Level, in my mind).

I chickened out and loaded the normal CPL version. I'll let someone else adopt this new control center first. Maybe give it a try on the next release...

The C3(Catalyst Control Center) is a nice addition. No issues here. I suppose there is a lot more overhead when using the C3 so if you need to squeeze out absolutely every last drop of performance, then use the old CPL, other wise the C3 is fine.

I'm curious to see a head to head comparison between the two versions to get a real idea of how much if any performance is effected.

The difference is indiscernable. I checked with Far Cry and D3 before I installed the CCC last week....-/+1%. This was without .net installed for the regular control panel so apparently there's not much overhead with that either. I will recheck with the 4.9 finals this weekend, albeit with .net installed for both the regular CP and the CCC as I ain't doing a fresh install! Of course, this is if "Ivan the Terrible" doesn't knock my power out or force me to evacuate. :)

The CCC included in this release is vastly improved (my own personal observations) over the initial public release a week or so ago...

Maybe I should've just been daring and tried it. :)

Next release I'll load it. I don't want to remove it now that I've already upgraded just to install the CC. Glad to hear that it seems to work pretty well though.

Maybe give it a try on the next release...me too. from what i've read, i have more to worry about installing .net, so i just installed the "classic" version of catalyst 4.9. but, i may eventually install .net, but i want to read about it a bit more. :)

am using the CCC myself and I quite like it... .net 1.1 is an update from windows and while the driver package is big and the first run of CCC seems to take a little longer than before i prefer the added functionality...

wrt skins I think using the system skin speeds things up tremendously  I am using a classix skin variant and its very snappy...

feature-wise its nothing special... its basically eye-candy but availability on right-click option is always good :D

wrt cat 4.9's... I am loving them so far... they seem to have boosted gaming performance all round.. check my farcry results thread with 4.7's - 4.9's for comparative results :D

now if ati can hurry up and deliver on the content delivery system whereby you only need to update elements that have been changed in the drivers I would be happy :D

I should also get digital cable again in a coupla weeks and will try out the latest MMC then

I don't think you should be worried about trying it. I haven't noticed a difference performance-wise in games when having the CC installed versus a CP only installation. Not sure about others but my main complaint on things being slow and sluggish was just with the control center itself. I'd just prefer that quick access items like that be fast and efficient. Once things are setup I don't notice any difference. Also, like Sazar mentioned, you can use a system skin and customize the interface even more to remove a lot of the excess baggage which helps make it a little faster to interact with. It's still a little too slow to launch and use for my tastes but hopefully they'll improve that with later releases. It's not too bad if you're not picky about that.

------------------

As far as the divers themselves, I don't really notice a difference performance-wise over the 4.8s and the 4.9 beta I've been going back and forth between so I'm keeping the 4.9s.

------------------

I don't think having .NET installed is that big a deal. I went ahead and used windows update to install it on all my computers just for consistency.

Everything running good with the 4.9's, about the same as the 4.8's. CCC is nice but slow.
