Keep going or call it quits?

Is Far Cry worth the time or am I hopelessly enamoured by id?

I felt a bit bored with Far Cry as well. Sure it looks swell, but it was just a bit .. whats the word.. unadventurous. Some bits were great. You get spoiled by the latest and greatest, then stuff before just doesn't have the edge.

You shoulda played Far Cry 1st.. :D

I haven't got my copy of DIII yet and am loving Farcry atm, driving around in a speedboat at the minute and the mention of a hanglider ride has me :drooling:
I reckon Farcry is worth it but it sounds like you're just not giving it a chance. You've answered your own question there on line two :ORDER:
Looking forward to DIII afterwards

Hmmm....I haven't played Doom yet so I can't compare. I thought FarCry was pretty good, but I don't think it got considerably better as I progressed - there fore if you don't like it now, you prolly won't like it much more later.
Just my opinion. How far did you get though? Finish the first mission? The game is pretty long so I wouldn't struggle to finish it, that would just take a lot of time.

To me Far Cry is fun until you get to the gentically modified freaks, they are just way too strong even on easy. One swing from those things and you are gone, I've completed it, but it was still annoying as hell :D

Also they picked a late level to give you the SAW.

Vamp, I think you summed it up. The game is more annoying than difficult. Doom3 GOTY.

I kinda agree with this. However, since you have the game, don't waste it away. It has some good points. Since you already finished D3, finish Far Cry. No its not immersive like D3, but its still not a bad game.

FarCry is more immersive than Doom3... AI in Doom3 sucks compared to FarCry... :) ...the areas in doom3 are all cramped indoors... ...farcry has indoors(which is comparable to doom3) as well as outdoor environments as far as the eye could see...

FarCry > Doom3

I dont know. I own both games, and I play them @1280 res. Doom on High and Far Cry with 8xAF and now with sm 3.0. Both games are nice to look at.

IMO, Far Cry is more fun to play for me. TBH, I only reached the treehouse section with the first few mutant creatures before City Of Heroes had me for awhile, so I never finished it. Im definately going back to it soon.

Doom looks real good (no surprise there), but never drew me in at all. Ive tried to get into it about 3 or 4 times now but it doesnt hook me like Far Cry. It is immersive and spooky to play in the dark but thats about it. System Shock 2 had better gameplay for a spooky one.

Far Cry was more fun overall. The story (as far as FPS stories go) was much better. The vehicles are a blast when you have them. Deciding how to hit an outpost and executing the attack is fun, even when you get spotted :D . The music fits the game perfectly as well.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy has always been my preference game-wise. I never wanted normal shooters ala Far Cry, Call of Duty etc. so Doom should have had me over FC. Didnt work that way though ,did it? ;)

Far Cry was more fun overall.

i agree... i have farcry & doom3 also... :)

...you should try the later stages of farcry... :)

btw

in terms of graphics engine...

DOOM3 > PainKiller (we all know that ID's new engine is great)

but in terms of playability and enjoyment...

PainKiller > Doom3 :) (even if the storyline of Painkiller is simple compared to Doom3, ...it is still more fun than Doom3)

HalcYoN,

I guess its different strokes for different folks. I did not like Doom3. In fact its way over rated IMHO. After the first few maps I had to force my self to play it. It was the same thing over and over again (walk into mostly dark room, hear scary sounds, see glipses of monsters in flash light, change to weapon of choice, fire, fire, fire, reload, moster spawn behind you, fire, fire, ect, rinse repeate for the next 15 levels). There was very little freedom in the game. I got Doom3 the day it came out. I just finnished it last night. There were some things I liked about Doom3. The graphics (when you could see them) were very very good. Except for the point head player models :) The horror thing they played to a "T" very good job there. I did like the plot and the PDA interaction. Then there were some things that just erked me. Piss poor MP support. I know its a single player game focus but this is ID we are talking about not some fly by night company. They evented MP and they left us hanging with nothing creative with its MP. The whole flash light thing. Yea I know that what they wanted to do but it just does not make any sense at all.

The reason why I liked Farcy was its settings. I though it was a nice change to be able to play outdoors mostly in such a lush enviorment. I also loved the freedom. You could go to almost any where you can see. And most of the out door engagements you were free to play to your style. Got that encampment of mers ahead? You could go rambo style to take them out. You could play mr predator and take them out one at a time, you could do a combo, you could try to come from the back of the camp, ect. And it had some what decent AI. Sure there were times when they did really stupid stuff. But there were other times it made smart moves. And the MP can be fun. It at least does not have the silly default 4 player restriction and more than DM/CTF. Farcry is not with out its flaws (vehicle control is too "picky", over all looks are "cartoony", models are not the grate, some AI flaws, bugs, ect).

So good sir I am gladf you really enjoyed Doom3. And I am not trying to change any ones opinions or views on the two games. I am just saying that not every one enjoyed Doom3 as much as you did......

IMOH each game has its own points. I enjoyed FarCry quite a bit. I got it the day it came out as well as Doom3 and was impressed right off the bat. It sounds like you were expecting starwars. FC has great AI much better than Doom3. FC also has some of the best and imersive graphics anywhere. You just want to play Doom3 glory and your mind has downplayed FC so it makes it ok for you to play Doom3 without feeling bad for FC.

IF YOU PLAY IT..... IT WILL BE FUN.

The boat level on Far Cry is probably the best level on any game IMO. You can do it about 10 different ways and even miss some parts out.

I'm having the same problem as you are however with Doom3, ie forcing myself to complete the first level. Maybe with the dark cold winter nights I'll get into the swing of it. I do like to see my enemies though, the flashlight is a pita.

I find that if you're a FPS (first person shooter) purist; you'll like Doom3 more. If you enjoy running around pretty scenic areas and getting sniped by rockets*; you'll like FarCry more.

*I keep seeing mention of how great FarCry's AI is. FarCry's AI is retarded. The enemies are all positioned in areas that immediately fire upon the player. It doesn't matter how far you are. If you're in their FOV, prepare to start dodging rockets. The game becomes an exercise in futility as your opponent's weaponry is too powerful. You'll be doing the save/die/reload shuffle for a lot of the game. IMO, a well-designed game shouldn't "require" a person to constantly save the game. I'm no newbie either. I can just imagine what a person new to the FPS genre would go through.

The trigens are not too bright either. Running over them in a vehicle of your choosing is ridiculously easy, but heaven forbid you should meet them toe-to-toe. Quake1 fiends, anybody?

All in all, the game is just poorly done. It's like the developer designed these gorgeous outside areas and then decided to make a game. The level should be designed with gameplay in mind. This game has poor layout. Very poor.

Save yourself the trouble and delete, FarCry. Reinstall, Jedi Knight: Outcast or Academy, and experience a FPS single player game the way it should be. If you haven't played either of these games; you owe it to yourself to do so.

Farcry is fun to start, but the levels start to drag on after the mutants arrive. Doom 3 started slowly, picked up steam then got boring after a while too once the visuals wore off and you are left with the same old find the key, open the door, kill the monsters gameplay. No replay value at all.

GOTY for me is UT2004 and especially Onslaught. No comparison the most replay from me.

Well, i've finished Far Cry and Doom3

Far Cry.Very inovative, specialy the ability to have almost 100% freedom of movements
Beautifuly designed outdoors scenery, very good balanced interiors
I disagree with the AI bit.Sometimes is John Rambo style mayhem.Shoot at everithing that moves.Don't bread, they will hear you.The mercks will charge you in mass (do like the concept of the team work they got on the merks though)
Trigen are the stuff of nightmare. You need to get almost 1 billion rounds on them (and this is the beginning on Three House) as things advance, it gets harder and harder
And the most disapointing part for me: The ending of the game. I don't know about you guys, but when i did finish the game, it let me, well, flat.I was hopping for something more ...erm...spectacular.Oh well, you can't have everithing

Doom3.Carmak engine.Smooth and functional. Not the best play experience ever, but still extremely enjoyable
Imersive interiors, very opresive and scary.
Yes, again the AI is left wanting, but unfortenately that seems to be the ptoblem with FPS.
On the view of looking at the grapichal detail: Awsome
On gameplay: Yes it could have been better

PS-Yes, i did love the handglidder on Far Cry.That rocked :headbang:

PS2-Currently playing Soldiers-Heroes of WW2, and i'm loving it

I played and completed boths. Far cry first because I got it first then Doom3.

I enjoyed far cry and bits of it where great fun and looked great.

I loved Doom3 the graphics in any other game are going to seem dated now. Anything without realtime lighting will just look wrong, which is too of all previous games, I'm not saying that D3's lighting is perfect but it's such a leap forward and now I know what a modern gfx card CAN do any new games coming out are going to need good lighting over flashy effects ( like pretty water ).

I'm replaying Doom3 at the moment on nightmare mode and past the Hell level and loving it.

I intend to replay far cry afterwards just to get my moneys worth from it but I doubt I'll complete it again.

I don't think there is anyone here who will say Doom 3 is not a graphical masterpiece. But great graphics do not a great game make. In just about every other aspect of the overall gameplay experience, it falls flat on its pretty face. I was so incredibly bored that I didn't even bother to finish it. Aside from graphics, Doom 3 brought nothing else to the table. My initial rating for the game was a 7, but if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't have rated it higher than a 4 or 5. I expected nothing less than greatness from id and I feel terribly disappointed with the effort they've given here.

Far Cry still gets my vote for Game of the Year to this point. Here you have a virtually unknown developer coming in and delivering a (for the most part) outstanding product. While playing Far Cry, I experienced a level of immersion in the game that I hadn't had since Half-Life. Yes, it was frustrating as hell at points, but I never wanted to stop playing. This game delivered a more complete package than Doom 3.

Discounting the Half-Life 2 factor, unfortunately I think all the major publications will get caught up in Carmack fever and give the GOTY award to a product I feel doesn't deserve it.

I have both games and I think farcry is as good as Doom3. For gameplay, just like any other games, each of these 2 games follows its own concept from the beginning to the end. There are a few new ideas and twists here and there to make the games more fun and keep the players going.

IMO, Doom3 is amazing in the beginnging but after first few stages the whole gameplay stays the same all the way to the end. On the other hand, first few stages of farcry are pretty much the same in gameplay. I almost gave up on the carrier stage but I kept going. A few stages later the enermy AI became harder and harder and actually made farcry more and more interesting. Also these vehicles in farcry are very cool too.

I would keep playing Farcry, it only gets better.

I guess Painkiller will be my next game.

I will give Far Cry another chance, but instead, I think I will play Q3A on Nightmare first. Heh.
