Being an avid car nut as well as pc enthusiast, I just spent my lunch at the local Bestbuy playing a racing game on xbox complete with a 60' HDTV, steering wheel & pedals setup. Needless to say, I was immediately hooked. Now looking for a way to replicate that same or at least similar experience at home. Sadly of course the $4K HDTV is outta my price range, unless someone wants to donate to a charitable cause?

Are there truly any awesome racing games out there for pc or is the console genre really only where its at? If so, whats the best racing game out there and would it be worth it to pickup an xbox?

About the only PC racing game that's coming out would be Juiced. I loved the demo and can't decide if I want to get it for PC or Xbox.

Best arcade racer right now is Burnout 3. I loved the second, and 3 improves on its prdecessor in every way. I would have considered buying Street Racing Syndicate if they had included some American cars in the mix (would it have been that hard to license a Neon SRT-4?). :lame:

The other big racer for Xbox is Forza. It's supposed to be the Grand Turismo for Xbox, and Microsoft apparently shelled out for licenses that Sony wouldn't (eg Ferrari).

If you can afford an Xbox, go for it. I love mine. There are a lot of other great games besides racers: DOA3, Ultimate and Volleyball ( :drooling: ), Ninja Gaiden, ESPN NFL/NHL 2k5 and the grandaddy of 'em all - Halo 2 (which I will be in Las Vegas for during its release grrrrrr).

The consoles are the best place for racing games IMO .. for thier easier controls & more offered titles .
there are some good PC racing games of course , but isnt as good as to be played on consoles .

on XBox i liked Sega GT2002 & Apex .. but they're not worth to pickup an Xbox just to lay them IMO .

also i heard about Froza .. which might turn to be a big hit . its not released yet AFAIK

PGR2 on the other hand is great & recevied a high rating in most sites .

Midtown Madness 3 too .. this one cool & a hell lota fun .. but its an arcade racer unlike the others .

for PC i liked NFS:U & Pro Race driver 2 (though i couldent purchase it yet) .

but to be honest .. among all these racing games .. GT3(&2) are the only truly awesome racing games i've ever played . & thats why i'm keeping my PS2 .. just to play GT4 as soon as it comes!

EA Sports F1 Challenge 99-02

especially with the Sports Car Challenge mod, done by http://www.rsdg.net

There are a ton of other mods, cars, tracks, etc out there too for this simulator..

Everything else is just an arcadish toy compared to F1C and its mods. Period.
Console racing games are more like arcade games compared to this, including the grand turismo series... The level detail, physics engines, race presentation blow anything else out of the water. Even in practice mode, you pull out of your garage in the pits, roll to the track entrance and wait till your turn to go.. And on race day, they truley did give it a "race day intensity" feel. There's communities out there that host online race championships, every week.

Also, in the future, coming soon is the GTR stand alone, and the rForce engine.

Oh forgot about Racer. its an opensource simulator.. probably just as, or maybe even more in depth than EA F1C.. again, there's tons of tracks, cars, setups, etc done by an active community.

Remember, these I listd are simulators... not arcade games..

I'm not a fan of F1/NASCAR racing games, but I would probably pick up F1C if/when they finish the Road America mod. That track looks awesome - will take me back to the weekend where I got to race it in several of the world's hottest cars. :D

Check out the SCC and ETCC mods then.. and the other cars out there..

BTW, I believe that track is out.. I'll have to check when I get home, but I remember doing a few laps of Road America with a C5R in SCC...

What event was this? sounds neat!

Come on guys.. Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 4 is THE KING of racing simulators. Driving mechanics and physics feel perfect, and the tracks are mapped 100% to GPS, even the inclines and unevenness. The EA games dont come close if you want a real 'simulator'.

Pc only though I'm afraid.

JuiceZ, for Xbox - RalliSport Challenge 2, hands down the most enjoyable racing game ever made. PGR2 is also a lot of fun, but IMO nothing comes close to playing RSC2 with your friends.

What event was this? sounds neat!

It was an event for automotive journalists only. Most of the major manufacturers were there, bringing some of their hottest cars for writers to drive on road courses and around the track. Here were some of the cars we got to race around the track:

Chevy Corvette Z06
Pontiac GTO
Saturn Ion Redline
Ford Mustang convertible (2004, not the new one)
Dodge Magnum
Dodge RAM SRT-10
Dodge Neon SRT-4
Chrysler 300C
Mazda6
Mazda3
Mazda RX-8
Mercedes CLK-55 AMG (got this badboy up to 120 on the track)
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS
Jaguar XJ-R
Volkswagen R32
Acura TL
Cadillac XLR
Honda S2000
Mini Cooper S
BMW 645i
Porsche Boxster S

That's all I can remember for now. Needless to say, I had a lot of fun there. :D

I am the biggest racing fan there is JuiceZ. X-Box has some good ones with Project Gothom and Forza coming. But Grand Turismo 4 is also coming in November for the PS2 and it will be end all of all racing games. I had part 3 and it hate my life. You were able to play it as a arcade game or a sim and a hardcore sim at that where it would take you near two hours of continues driving with real tire wear to finish some circuits. This time around everything is improved. More tracks, cars, custimizations every thing a racing fan needs. It will feature alot of the real world tracks including the longest which name I forget but takes like full half hour to complete a lap. If your serious about a racer get a PS2 and GT4 in November.

Check out some trailers and game shots.
http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/489/489327/imgs_1.html
http://gametrailers.com/vault-g3.html

-It will feature over 50 real world street, rally, desert, circuit and tracks that are not real but based on real life loctaions.
-Over 500 cars from 1886 up to 2004 with control and engine sounds unique to that car
-Sold separately 900 steering wheel made of real leather and featuring physics and characteristics to mimic each car. So you will know what a Saleen Porsh or a Nissmo steers like
-Online play

I had the old one and sold in the FS section to put away money for this one.

Nascar Racing 2003 is the best. It is so realistic that many of the Nascar drivers will use this to practice on before they go to a certain track.

We had Sunday marathons with GT A-Spec F1 circuit tracks which rocked and part 4 looks even more rocking.

I am really enjoying the Xpand rally demo, and looking forward to FlatOut... Im considering buying a Logitech MOMO Racing wheel.....

It debatable.. Especially with the physics engine.... Tracks in GP4 are very good though.... F1C 99-02 is much more moddable though... add mods on top of both, and its gets blurrier..

Argh, now I don't know what to do :p

Know there's a lot of good racing sims out there but, I usually lean more towards the arcade style w/ some realism throughout. GT4 looks to be killer as does the Logitech® Driving Force™ Pro but, I'd hate to go out and buy a PS2 in Nov just as HALO 2 makes its debut.

On the XBOX side, Sega GT2002 is really fun & Froza looks purdy sweet but as far as arcade racing games go, nothing looks to top the GT series.

Its pretty obvious though, the better racing games are on consoles.

If you want racing car simulation, try Live for Speed S1 (http://www.liveforspeed.com)

- Demo: http://www.liveforspeed.net/file_rsc.php?name=LFS_S1G_DEMO.zip

If you want pure arcade fun and track building, try TrackMania (http://www.trackmaniagame.com)

- Demo: http://www.gamershell.com/download_5851.shtml

Those two are the driving games that have been taking almost all my gaming time for a looooooong time now :)

I would also recommend Gran Prix Legends for pure sim or wait until GTR comes out(it's going to be BIG).For arcade racers I would recommend Colin Mc Rae Rally,Gran Turismo(it's not a sim even with tire wear and marathon races) or Burnout games.

Best Racing Game on console or PC?

PS2 : Gran Turismo series / Wipeout 2097
PC : Need For Speed Underground 1/2

Maybe a little Mario Kart but it would have to be the N64 version.

Just my personal choices.

GTR will be interesting.. So far I hear the official word is November for selected European release.. Then other countries will follow.. They just need to find distributors for different geos.

I found this great place for racing sims/games: Rrace Sim Central Forums..

Nobody mentioned Richard Burn's Rally, At first go it's a pretty hardcore sim, and a lot of people complain there's no grip at all in the corners, but once you complete the driving school and learn to back off the accellerator and use your brakes, the game is SERIOUSLY rewarding. I'm playing it with a ps2 joypad at the moment and i can still win events on it, and once you get a feel for the cars and how to drive them it blows colin mcrae away completely. Nothing beats left foot braking around a medium right for some oversteer then straightening up and flooring it out of the apex. :D

WTF?!
the gt series is NOT an arcade game!!!
it is a driving simulation, and the best one at that.
pls dont do that mistake. and what halo2 has to do with this thread??

and what halo2 has to do with this thread??

If you actually took the time to read this thread, you would know that Juice is asking about whether or not he should purchase an Xbox. Halo 2 was brought up as a case to justify said purchase in addition to whatever other racing games will be available for the system.
