My favourites for the following at the moment are:

cloning: norton ghost

defrag: norton speed disk

disk check: norton disk doctor

What would people recommend for reliability and speed and compatibility with newest drives and various filesystems?

Are there any good freeware/open source (non-spyware) utilities? Windows or dos?

Thanks.

it all comes down to what OS you're running ..symantec's packages for 2000/xP have been really narrowed down to norton antivirus and ghost ...because speed disk in its new version has started using the required APIs so it's not what it used to be. Disk doctor is useless ..why use it when you have powerful nt chkdsk ?

anything before 2000/xp ..those aforementioned utilities will do fine

I 've heard good reports on raxco's perfect disk, and O & O defrag ..i was told of diskeeper's inability to really consolidate free space and how it might make it even worse

Thanks - i used speed disk because it was faster that the 2000 / 9x scan disk.

I like O&O and DiskKeeper myself.

O&O does a better job, IMO. :)
