View Full Version : 5600 driver nightmares

First, Thank you to everybody that's responded. I've been googling everything :-P, even tried putting the card in another box to do it, then tried dosemu in linux (doesn't work). I'm still searching, but I'm not finding anything new. Does anybody know if the linux kernel can access the eeprom somehow maybe in /proc, so I could do a dd if=imagefile of=/proc/agp/guessing .... I'll check the linux forum.

I have the SAME CARD and the SAME PROBLEM. Just got it off 'imagestore' via eBay. I too removed my heatsink, the chip said 5600 Ultra and has a heat spreader (version 2 flipchip, the 'good' one, ha!)
Firstly all the files you could ever want are here ;
http://whitebunny.demon.nl/hardware/chipset_nvidia.html#nvflash
See if this sounds familiar;
(1) Bios is 4.31.20.39.0 which is NON Ultra
(2) Bios we NEED is 4.31.20.52.00 (FX5600 Ultra) (see url above)
(3) NVFlash says 'Board ID Mismatch' or 'GPU Mismatch' depending on whether you suppress warnings or not and fails
(4) Core is 270 (2d) and 300 (3d) instead of 400
(5) Memory is 400 instead of 800 (think 400 is right but not treated as ddr?)
(6) Coolbits won't accept any other speeds EVEN UNDERCLOCKING
(7) Powerstrip allows 448 core and 443 memory max so far
(8) It runs 33% slower than my ti 4200 :((
(9) We got ripped off, the thing is a total lemon
I'm determined to get this damned ultra bios to work on it, and very carefully clock it to death. What a joke, I'm ordering a gpu waterblock for this and now I discover it's probably a waste of time.
Very frustrated, it's 3:48am and I'm still trying to find the answer, we should be able to sue. You can't f**king use words like 'Ultra' and clock it over 33% SLOWER than a 'proper' ultra dammit. Will be requesting an exchange on something else even though I don't think it's the shop's fault, but on the other hand this isn't fit to sell, it's junk.
Mutter mutter.

Kept at it til 5am, decided to heed the advice of other posters and not persevere with trying to flash to the ultra bios in case it fries my ram, I guess with power strip I can achieve the same thing although it's dog slow.
3DMark01 3DMark03
ti4200 clocked 280/551 11500 1550
fx5600 clocked 448/443 8800* 1500*
* I had the damned thing at 9450 and 2050 and have no idea how. I can't clock it higher, have tried several driver versions, but who cares what level of useless it is, it sucks.
The heatsink makes no contact with the ram unlike my ti4200 which is all over it both sides so I think that's why the ram dies when I clock it faster. It's the same ram based on the actual numbers on the chip as a 128Mb Ultra.
Sigh.

Okay I give up, my memory is - wait for it - 5ns and designed to run at 200Mhz (400 on powerstrip/coolbits), exactly HALF the speed of a 128Mb Ultra (I finally learnt how to read the speed off the chips like you guys probably did all along :rolleyes: )
This Samsung page is great ;
http://www.samsung.com/Products/Semiconductor/GraphicsMemory/DDRSDRAM/256Mbit/K4D551638D/K4D551638D.htm
Here's the sad tail, dunno why it doesn't list 400Mhz for 2ns though ;
Part Number Max Freq. Max Data Rate Interface Package
K4D551638D-TC2A 350MHz 700Mbps/pin SSTL_2 66pin TSOP-II
K4D551638D-TC33 300MHz 600Mbps/pin SSTL_2 66pin TSOP-II
K4D551638D-TC36 275MHz 550Mbps/pin SSTL_2 66pin TSOP-II
K4D551638D-TC40 250MHz 500Mbps/pin SSTL_2 66pin TSOP-II
K4D551638D-TC45 222MHz 444Mbps/pin SSTL_2 66pin TSOP-II
K4D551638D-TC50 200MHz 400Mbps/pin SSTL_2 66pin TSOP-II
K4D551638D-TC60* 166MHz 333Mbps/pin SSTL_2 66pin TSOP-II
I wrote down K4D551638F, not ending in D, but I think it was a typo since samsung don't have that part.
Anyway there you go, 256Mb FX 5600 Ultra cards DO exist, they DO have the version 2 flipchip ultra gpu, and their memory is HALF the speed of a 128Mb one.
Anyone want a cheap card? :lame:

God I'm sorry to keep going on this should be my last post - just want all his written down for future victims to find when searching in the middle of the night.
Think the '0' is a 'D' in my part number, TC50 will always mean 5ns anyway but this site lists memory and is useful ;

Watch out for Imagestore, it's the same place I got my "5600 ...Ultra" hacked up pos.
You hit the card with a brick :box: :banghead: ?
So what are you going to do now? Have a replacement card in mind?
sorry I havn't posted in a while, as I have bricked the card. Very :lame:
What card are you running with now?

That machine is down for now. I have 2 others in the house tho, internet workstations, nothin' special.
I'm looking at <=$100 radeons or geforce fx's on newegg. It's a shame to not have a great card in the fastest machine ever in this house(Besides that car that time......)
If you can save more money and wait a bit the 6200, 6600, and 6600GT AGP cards will be out soon. All are suppose to have great performance.
6200 retails $129, 6600 Im guessing $169, and 6600GT at $199. From reviews I read they are all suppose to be great cards and overclock well.
This website has some reviews on them you may want to read :)
Heck, the way I read the 6200 review, that little card will outperform my $200 dollar GFFX 5900! Not bad for $129 :)
I think there's not gonna be an AGP 6200... it would make the PCB too costly to use the bridge chip...

That graphics card certainly put you through the wringer and I hope you contact the vendor and send them a link to this thread.
But I have some good news as I recently retired a system (http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/soltek_qbic_eq3702m/index.shtml) that had a BFG GeForce 5700 Ultra (http://www.bfgtech.com/5700u_redux.html).
I'll be happy to donate the 5700 Ultra if you want it. And I'll even pay for shipping if you live in the continental US :)
man that's generousity :D
That is VERY generous :D
I hope Roguestar191 reads this and accepts the offer :)

After getting the 5700Ultra installed, it worked right away. I installed Windows XP, and tried out the first game I had access to, GTA Vice City. WOW! Even with AA 8x it's playable, even when it's raining (Though it jumps a little when raining), and with no AA it's Friggen fast. I can't wait to try some new games on it!
Windows boot times
1st boot after fresh install - 3 seconds
2nd boot after first lockup - 7 seconds (I had the FSB at 400mhz, even tho the barton only supports 333)
3rd boot after driver installs - 7 seconds
WOW! Windows loading faster than linux...
