Hiya!

I'm after some general advice. I currently have a Aopen 5900XT 128mb which I'm pretty chuffed with, but it hasn't bowled me over in quite the way I had anticipated after upgrading from a Ti 4400 !

So my question is this: Should I hold off right now, saving up for Athlon 64, new M/b and latest Nvidia card in PCI-Express format, or simply go for a 6800 GT right now?? What sort of difference will it make ?

(foshiz)

(Lol. first post, couldn't resist!)

bye for now!

You should only upgrade when you feel that performance in your games is not up to where you would like it. The 5900XT is still a solid card and will continue to be so for the forseeable future (long as you're not into high resolution + FSAA gaming). Waiting for PCI-Express to become more common wouldn't hurt you at all.

The time to upgrade is really up to you. The 6800 GT is leaps and bounds above the 5900 XT. You'll be able to play Far Cry at 1600X1200 with 2X AA and AF with no problems at all. My old 5900 nu would stutter like crazy at 1600X1200. You can get the 6800 GT now and be very happy or wait a little and get a PCI-E system.

You have to remember that something better will always be right around the corner in this business.

%100 true.

My oppinion is if your games are playing fine now and you dont have stuttering problems at the resolution YOU LIKE to play at, then wait for PCI-e Nvidia cards. Better yet, is wait for pci-e and get a 6800 GT pci-e then buy another same brand 6800GT pci-e board a few months later and sli them. You'll have to wait for a mainboard with 2x pci-ex16 slots tho.
