Hi

I have a MSI 6800 Ultra.
With the stock cooler i can achieve only 436/1209.

I think the card can do more, but it needs better cooling.

The question is:

Who has Ultra installed with NV Silencer 5?
Can u tell me about it? Is it worth it? Is it better than stock cooler?
I read many lame things about NVS5, and they are very disappointing.

If i would buy one, could i achieve more mhz with the gpu?

More than likely the nvSilencer 5 is not going to get you any more overclocking then what you are getting.Your chip is more than likely at it's limit.

Are u sure about it? :(

I personally feel it is worth it. I did not have the best of luck with the out of box fit but after some mods it works very well. The plates used to cool the memory were too thick and had to be taken down so that the core could make full contact on all side/corners. If you buy one, assemble the parts without any thermal compound and hold the card up to a bright light source looking between the card and heat sink at all diff angle to make sure the HS base is making 100% contact with the GPU core.
The reasons to get it are:
1: Quieter then the stock solution
2: 10C cooler at full load for me in my case
3: The heat from the 70+ watt GPU core is being expelled outside of the case instead of being blown around inside.
4: 10MHz higher overclock on the core with memory clocks unchanged.

Oh man, a straight answer. thx.

btw U say u took down the mem coolers. What else have u put on that fits under this cooler?

I used to only be able to run 440/1.2mhz... any higher and I would get major artifacts after an hour of CS Source or so... now I run 450/1.25 and play for hours on end without any artifacts.... strangly enough I can even run 460/1.25 on some games...

I have an unused NV5 that I was going to install on a GT, but I ended up returning the GT for an Ultra. I am still debating on installing it my Ultra. The main reason? I am really not keen on hacking up the PCI slot cover of my Ultra. Esp if I have to RMA it at some point.

Put mine on today and it's at 53C idle and 62C at load. Before that my idles were in the mid 60C's and upper 70's under load. Very impressed with the cooling difference over Evga's stock.

Reliant: hmm... and u didn't have any problems at all? what about your overclocking? do u use as5 or just the packaget thermal paste?

Wonder how those temps would compare to stock cooler reapplied w/ AS5.

Which one is better air cooling for the ultra?

1. Stock Cooler with AS5

2. Stock Cooler with some brand thermal paste like thermalright or something.

3. NV Silencer 5 with it's own paste

4. NV Silencer 5 with AS5?

:thinker:

Reliant: hmm... and u didn't have any problems at all? what about your overclocking? do u use as5 or just the packaget thermal paste? I used Geil copper thermal paste. It allowed me to run at 415/1.11ghz. The core locked up at 420mhz my previous best on the Evga stock cooling without it locking up was 387/1.10Ghz.

They will have a new version out that addresses this problem within a month.

hmmm... then i'll wait 1-2 months... as i see, the nv silencer 5 is not the best choice right now. :/
