New drivers (4365) released today!

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=freebsd_1.0-4365

I've noticed that if you go through the options on www.nvidia.com to select your card/os and such it takes you to the new driver. But the "Linux and Freebsd Drivers" page still shows the 3.2.0.3 driver.

I've installed it and it works great!

Edit: fixed typo

Wow awesome!

Thanks NVIDIA :-)

Good bye ATi card.

Both STABLE and CURRENT support? OMG, love you nVidia =).

(Now if you could only release PPC/Linux drivers, that would make buying a PowerMac G5 an easier choice)

At this point, I'm honestly surprised they haven't just rebranded the old drivers with a new version and released those. Seems like the next logical step in their "support" for FreeBSD.

Thankfully, they HAVE indeed proven me wrong. I just updated the drivers, and glxgears shows a nice increase in framerate. 1280x1024x24 bit color:

3203 drivers:
6142 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1228.400 FPS
6429 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1285.800 FPS
6419 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1283.800 FPS
6323 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1264.600 FPS
5921 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1184.200 FPS
6396 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1279.200 FPS
6443 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1288.600 FPS
6338 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1267.600 FPS

4365 drivers:
7782 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1556.400 FPS
8228 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1645.600 FPS
8409 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1681.800 FPS
8356 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1671.200 FPS
8408 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1681.600 FPS
8393 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1678.600 FPS
8432 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1686.400 FPS
8396 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1679.200 FPS

I just hope that now the drivers are a bit more unified (is that the right word?), so that updates don't take over 6 months.

Edit: Forgot to mention, this is with a GeForce 2 Ti

BRILLIANT!

I just installed these, and they installed over the old drivers without a hitch (Freebsd 5.1 - RIVA TNT - 1600x1200 )

Without altering my XF86Config at all, I've seen the following improvements:

1) THE BIGGY: Starting X - the system used to hang for about 2 minutes before starting up.. Everything would literally freeze. This also happened if you used CTRl-ALT-F4 (etc) to switch to a console window.

Now, it goes STRAIGHT in, on startup, and on switching back from a console (ALT F12 [on mine] )

This has saved MAJOR headaches.

2) Arguably the most important :-) : tuxracer now runs correctly without employing the dreaded SDL Parachute and messing up the sscreen resolution.

3) GL Version: 1.3.1 NVIDIA 32.03 ---> 1.4.0 NVIDIA 43.65

4) GL Renderer: RIVA TNT/AGP/3DNOW! --> RIVA TNT/AGP/SSE/3DNOW!

-- seems to be using my athlon xp (2100) SSE extensions now, though I don't see any speed increase with glxgears... time will tell

Things are much 'cleaner' too.. Much more stable... I've got a newish machine, running on an old RIVA TNT card that I'll be upgrading at some stage..... Now I know which company I'll be buying my card from..

Thanks NV.

By the way, can anyone shed any light on the GL renderer now seeing SSE ?
Cheers,
Jamie

Strange enough I'm having a few problems with this new driver on an ASUS A7N266-VM MoBo.

FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE, can attach any kernel config if needed. Note that the old driver installed from the ports worked without problems here.

If I try to load the KLD at boot using loader.conf the system freezes just after kernel bootup(just before executing the rc script) and I can't either get in single user.

Instead loading the module after boot using kldload works, after that X starts and everything looks ok, but I get the following messages:

(pasted from /var/log/messages, hope it's not garbled)

I'd really like to know what's happening, and why I can't successfully load it from loader.conf.

P.S. Checked in the bios but I could not find any items about PNP OS in my bios...checking for a bios upgrade.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Tried to install the drivers, and get this error...

freebsd# make setup

I'm running FreeBSD 5.1. I picked install everything from the setup menu when I installed FreeBSD, so I assumed that it would install the Kernel source. Am I wrong?

heh, i am starting to regret switching back to Linux now that Detonator 4 has hit BSD... i'll see how things go along though. until i hear of success stories with XSI|EXP working with Linux emulation under FreeBSD, i'll probably stay put on Gentoo

*AlphaChild sorta wishes he stuck with FreeBSD*

Seems like it...

try:
ls /usr/src/sys

to find out!

anyway, you can easily install the source on a live system without hassle, just run /stand/sysinstall and choose the options:

Distributions Install additional distribution sets

then:
src

etc.
or use cvsup!

Alrighty, well ill start off by saying the old drivers have worked on my, and my friends machine. Upon installing the new drivers, they seem to work fine, until reboot. I get this following messages right after it attempts to mount my root partition:

pid 84 (fsck_ufs), uid0: exited on signal 8
pid 85 (fsck_ufs), uid0: exited on signal 8

The system countinues to halt and i cannot access the machine, even in single user mode. My friend has had the same problem as me, and we thought it was user error upon installing the drivers, so he put FreeBSD on another computer and the new drivers worked fine.

The only thing i could notice that was simliar on both the machines that these drivers did not work on was the nforce chipsets, i have an nforce chipset, my friend has an nforce2 chipset.

Anyone have any ideas? Please? It would be nice to get these drivers working, or even know what the problem is. Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem with the latest 4365 driver. I tried to install from the ports and from the tar ball but each and everytime, the computer reboot. I have a 4.8 Stable with the latest X, compiled the kernel with USER_LDP. My card is an old GeForce 256 with 32 megs ram, (so nothing fancy nowadays) ASUS A7PRO mobo with a 800Mhz Duron and 512meg. The monitor is a ViewSonic E790. This is my XF86Config :

Hi,

Try with only:

Section "Device"
Option "NvAgp" "0"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Something like that works with mine, but even after patch both files (see README) my KDE has crashes when closing some programs (as screensaver, shell...).

Goog luck!

PS/ I use gnome a little, no problems with it

I had that problem with the previous, beta drivers, but it was fixed by rebuilding KDE but first specifying:

WITHOUT_OPENGL= yes

as a make option.

This DOESN'T stop applications from working (quake2 still rips...)

Since I've been on the release drivers, I've not actually bothered to
uncomment that OPENGL option, so don't know if I would still have the problem you describe, but it seems that from your post, maybe it would.

Try the above, and you should hopefully find that screensavers and shells don't crash - and XMMS and OPERA don't go into infinite loops! worked for me!

cheers,
jamie

If you are experiencing stability problems, you should make sure that your kernel was built without optimizations or debug information; it's usually a good idea to try disabling AGP as well, as AGP related problems are not uncommon on Linux and FreeBSD. If you are using a VESA console, you should try disabling it as well: using two different, independent drivers for the same hardware is asking for trouble. In terms of the KDE segfaults, you need to build/install/boot the kernel after patching for the changes to take effect. The following FAQ has some general advice: http://www.soulwax.net/nvidia/faq.shtml.

Hi,

At the first my computer (4.8-STABLE) did not compile, so I decided to make an "makeworld" Ô_ö

Then I upgrade the KDE3 metaport:

# portupgrade -rR kde

So my KDE 3.1.0 now is a 3.1.2

After it I use the patch (I tried it with 3.1.0, but it did not work) machdep.c.diff:

# cd /usr/src/sys/i386/i386/
# patch -p0 -i ~/NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86-1.0-4365/doc/machdep.c.diff

And finally I re-build my kernel (becouse of a change of colors on my ttys)...

...and it works.

Oh, I have XFree86 4.3.0

Good luck!

PS/ I don't know if one ot those steps is not necesary. It's just a "recipe" that works with my machine :)

Well, the new version actually works with my card, however I have a problem. I'm getting the "restrictions on /dev/nvidiactl are too restrictive, see the README" type error. so I set the permissions and anything using OpenGL crashes the entire OS, when what I'm assuming is PAM resets the permissions. The linux readme doesn't really help, though, since PAM is different on FreeBSD, and has none of the files the readme mentions.

So, if anyone can tell me how I can stop it from resetting the permissions on the devices It'll be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Oh, and I don't mind disabling PAM completely if needed.

Sorry, probably should have mentioned I'm using FreeBSD 4.7, which uses linux PAM.

Hi all ,

I'm using a Geforce 3 Ti200 by Creative.

I've tried the new driver release.

I've a KT400 mobo , and if I compile Nvidia drivers with FreeBSD AGP when I use a game that have very big Textures (for example Enemy Territory at resolution of 1280x1024 + all 32bit + all effects max and Texture compression to NO ) after 30 seconds (about) of play the textures starts to flicker, and then the textures become of rainbow colors , and then (after all this ) about 2 minutes after I've started to play the VGA seems to load the wrong textures on the polygons (for example I find the texture of a barrel on the floor ) , after about a couple of seconds all start flicker , and the system freeze , if I reduce the dimension of the textures (for example by only enable texture compression) this problem disappear .

If I compile the driver with Nvidia AGP the problem disappears at all , but , Nvidia AGP supports KT400? In the readme it isn't in the list .

Thanks

Bye

zander

It does; you can double-check by looking at the AGP configuration as reported by the nvidia sysctl interface after starting the X server.

Someone knows if there is a patch for FreeBSD AGP ? I'd like to use the FreeBSD driver . (If I can use the things more open source I try to do so :D )

I want to declare a bug.

Using Gnome + RenderAccell makes the button s (when opening a window ) all messed up . Disabling that all turns normal .

I have a Creative GF3Ti200

Bye
