View Full Version : AMD or INTEL for temps.

I'm going to buy a new CPU/MB after xmas (my kt7-a raid & 1.3 tbird are getting a little long in the tooth)
The problem is the room I have to put them in is quite warm (my current case temp is 31c!) and the missus doesn't want to hear a 747 taking off when I boot up.
So, what is to best solution for speed/coolness?
I've narrowed it down to 2 final choices;
1: NFORCE 2 mb, XP2200+, 256-512meg pc2700 or over.
or
2: ASUS P4T533 RAID, 256meg 4200 rimms, P4 2.53B.
I don't want to be responsible for a bloody AMD v's INTEL war,
just some honest opinions.
Thanks. :)
P.S. Any opinions on which will have the longest lifespan (not needing to be upgraded soon after installation and upgradeability) would be appreciated.
I dont think that you will have any temp problems at all, unless you start overclocking, then I would same Intel would stay the coolest with a stock HSF to boot!!

If quiet and cool is what 'ya want, get the Intel. Your wife will thank you. :)
But do yourself a favor and don't bother with the overpriced RAMBUS memory. DDR333 and DDR400 offer pretty much the same performance at a much lower cost. Your wife should thank you again for that. ;)

Thanks for the replies.
The rimms come with the motherboard, supposed to be quite fast too!!!
The ASUS board I mentioned is currently topping the 3d mark 2001 charts (with a 9700 pro and LN2 cooling I might add, bit too exotic for me) 2000+ marks!!!
Definatley gonna top it of with an NV30 though, doom 3 demo crawls on this system @ 640x480 full detail (its only an alpha demo, I know....);
Abit KT7-A RAID
WINDOWS ME (98 UNSTABLE ON MY SYSTEM, 2000 TO SLOW, XP JUST WONT INSTALL!!!)
1.33 TBIRD @ 1.4GHZ
512 PC133 CAS 2
ASUS V8200 GF3
SBLIVE! VALUE (NEVER AGAIN!!!!)
FUJITSU 20GIG ATA66 7200RPM
MAXTOR 80GIG ATA133 7200RPM
21 INCH CRT MONITOR (1600X1200 @ 85HZ)

Anytime there's a major core change or die shrink, temps rise all over again and the science in getting the heat factor down begind anew. That's for both Intel and AMD. I think that, for the majority of PC folks, the heat issue is a non-issue (at least for me). We had so many years to adapt to and get used to it that I've pretty much accepted it.

Last night I installed one of those huge Zalman Copper Sinks/Fan (http://www.zalman.co.kr/english/product/cnps6000alCu.htm) on an Athlon 1600 XP. In low-noise mode, the 92 mm fan is at 1600 RPM and too quiet to hear outside the computer case.
The Zaman keeps my CPU 13 degrees C cooler than the previous Cooler Master sink&fan, which was much louder. It's a great solution for a quiet living-room computer, and Zalman has sinks for both AMD or Intel CPUs.
However, it's a bad sink for a LAN party rig or a machine that's relocated a lot, because the copper sink is over official weight specfication for the respective sockets, and the clip uses only the center ridges to hold it on.
