I apologize if this matter has been discussed before but since most people don't know how to write a subject title that reflects their actual problem is it very hard to backtrack messages.
I am having problems with my HP Pavilion 871 SE machine. It is equipped with a Geforce4 440 MX card and I am running Mandrake 9.0, and my own compiled 1.0-3123 NVidia driver (compiled from the source RPM's)
Problem: I have occational system lockups where the display gets all screwed up. I have attached an camera shot of it so you can see what it looks like when I just surfed Slashdot and everything froze.
Sometimes I can reset the computer with ctrl+alt+del and the display comes back as soon as xwindows is killed. (I see Mandrake shutting down all services in the console mode) but most of the times all I can do is turn the computer off by pressing the power button.
This problem was more frequent when I used the previous version of the NVidia drivers with Mandrake 8.2 but back then I also had a problem with the monitor just simply turning off now and then. That problem is now all gone, but the irritating lockups with scrambled display still exists and it's very annoying. Anyone got a sugestion?
