Hey guys, I'm recruiting for a MOD, if you're interested in helping, or think its a great idea post here!

Modifiction Name : Star Trek UT

Progress : No progress as of yet

Game : UT2004

Description: This is a first person shooter mod, based in the StarTrek Universe
I am looking for the following positions:

-Voice Actors
-Mappers
-Texture Artists
-Programmers
-Designers
-Modellers
-Skinners
-Animators
-Musicians
-Story writers

This is basically going to be what fans of the Elite Force Genre have been dreaming about, and will be a great, immersive experience for those who arent fans of the game or the show.

Elite force was really cool, and raven+ritual deserve a lot of credit for their fine work, but I feel that it could have been done better, we're aiming to have these gameplay elements from the start...

-Great AI
-Helpful, and responsive NPC's
-Deadly Foes
-Deep, complex storyline, moved along in game, and through cut scenes
-Really good character animations- no still moving people
-High polygon counts, and high texture quality, fully utilizing the Unreal Engine 2.5 :)
-Some interesting puzzles
-Expansive environments
-Many elements from the Star Trek movies and shows
-Many more as development begins!

I am fairly confident I will be able to find some people willing to work on the project, because many people would love to see this kind of stuff in a First Person shooter, and would love to see a true, immersive, pulse pounding, star trek game :)

Please post here or shoot me a PM if you are interested in helping, or just want to show support

Also, linking this on other forums etc.. would be greatly appreciated

I dont mean to shoot you down or anything but Ive tried making mods many times and its nearly IMPOSSIBLE to start out with ideas as big as that (believe me, I know). My suggestion would be to make a star trek style map for UT 2004 and put it on some well known websites to see if people like it. Include a text file with it that says you are interested in creating a small star trek mod. Make a few maps, and keep doing this and you might get enough attention to get some skilled people to help you. When and if you do, start small. Dont go for a huge, in depth mod. Make a few levels that are linked together. START SMALL. I cant stress that enough...

Another thing thats extremely important is that people need to know you are actually doing something yourself, or no one will help. I had a team of about 4 people working on a mod for halflife about 3 years ago but because we never had anything to show for it, we couldnt get any experience mod makers to join the team. So make some levels. And list the things that you do. IE programming, level making, modeling...

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for your advice :)

I will be doing things for the mod, I'm not one of those jerks that says I want to make a mod, and just have everyone else do the work, while I sit back and do nothing ;)

I will lend my voice as an NPC in the game, compose some music, and work on some levels, I have written the story, and will be the project leader, and coordinate everything, and be the PR guy :)

You know... you just gave me an idea...

With Half-Life 2 coming out, thats going to be a great mod platform. And theres one thing ive been wanting to make a mod\game of for at least 7 years... hmmm... i think im going to get some info together and possibly start a mod of my own.

No info yet though... I dont want anyone to steal my idea

Glad I have inspired you to think about creating a mod! Mod=Good for the gamers!

I really hope someone will join my team soon...

Heh, guess that makes 3 of us that has ideas for a game mod (but mine's the most original! :p )

Anyway, sounds like a cool project, nice to see a mod that seems to be focuesed on single-player rather than just a glorified deathmatch. Hmm, ya know, since it seems like Nvnews has enough mod makers on it, maybe would should just assemble a "Nvnews Mod Team", and then just complete mods one after another. Would certainly be faster than assembling our own teams :) . Not sure what I could do though, I've only done mapping in Half-life, and the only game animation program I've used is Milkshape. But, if you could give me a few pre-boned models in Milkshape format, I could probably do animations.

Well I might as well put my idea out there.

Shadowrun

I doubt I could use the shadowrun name without catching hell, so I could just call it "cyberpunk" or something similar.

I dont think itd be that hard really. Simple stat and "karma" system mixed with classes and races. Itd be first person, action\RPG\adventure... have a few single player levels, and multiplayer levels (starting small of course!). Multiplayer would be more difficult i guess, because you couldnt save, but single player would be great.

Ive never played the P&P game, so itd be based on the computer games (SNES and Genesis). My interest in this has grown a LOT recently. I just played through the Genesis version over the past month and i love that game. And over the past 2 days i played the SNES version... also an amazing game. Both are my top console games of all time. Id mix the features\gameplay of the two, and stick it in a first person perspective.

The way I see it, half-life 2 will already have most of what id need to make city levels (texture and object wise), so the levels wouldnt be too difficult.

Anyway, for those that dont know. Shadowrun is the heart and soul of cyberpunk. Near future, usually based in seattle, elves, dwarves, trolls, humans, orks... magic, technology, cybernetic enhancements (cyberware), hackers(deckers)... even native american folk lore and shamanism. Its an absolutely amazing setting. I cant wait to start putting the ideas to use.

I searched before i wrote this and didnt see any other active shadowrun mods for any other games. I found a few projects that seem to be dead. One for unreal tournament and one for half-life... niether have been updated in a while. So we wouldnt be copying anyone besides the original makers of shadowrun (FASA), which are now GONE.

For those worried about legal issues:
Wiz Kids owns the rights to the Shadowrun name and card game, and I believe Microsoft bought the electronic game rights to shadowrun.

Anyone interested in helping or know of anyone who would be, please contact me via PM.

BTW, sorry for thread hijacking... but ive loved Shadowrun since i first played it in 1994... Shadowrun for SNES mentioned Shadowrun 2 at the end. It never came... so maybe I can make it myself :)

I've actually been working on my own game engine :o

I wish you luck with your mod, Its hard to get a mod started and even harder to get a team together when they are doing ALOT more then the Lead... No offense, just your requiring them to do more then you are... PR is useless in a mod. They are community based and free... You dont need to sell it to anyone.

They are community based and free... You dont need to sell it to anyone.

But you do have to "sell" the idea to the community or else you'll never get the attention of skilled modders. If you have a team of good modelers, mappers and texture artists but no one that can program the mod to work, you're getting nowhere. So you need to have some good work done already to show the community that the rest of the team is skilled enough to actually get the project done.

Heh, you never even played the PnP Shadowrun game? Well that certainly sounds like an interesting idea, and admitedly not one I haven't considered myself (although more in the form of "if they made a new Shadowrun games it should be like this" kinda way). I've played the PnP RPG quite a bit and it sounds like a decent project, if you do want any help with it (mainly in the form of animation and maybe some mapping) let me know. Just as long as we actually DO something with it, rather than just let a bunch of half-made maps sit on our computers until the end of eternity.

Which reminds me...I wonder what happened to that Resident Evil: The Escape mod I worked on a long time ago...last I heard one of the members was planning a hostile takeover. Yeah, that project was a bit...unstable :p

Somehow I figured youd be interested, being a Deus Ex fan and all... its a similar setting.

And ill deffinitely take you up on your offer if things start pulling together. I really wish I had some sort of background in programming though. I really dont know anything about it at all. Especially not for games\mods. Hell i dont even know what programming language the games use... or even if they use a language. Bah, I dont even know what a programming language is :retard:

I know some HTML though

Im skilled in the least usefull areas sadly. Sound effects and 2d Art are my strong points. That and design I guess... I can sit and think out any gameplay idea\problem and think of a way to make it work.

Well call me a (newb) but this article is great:

http://www.scotlandsoftware.com/articles/programming/

Its an intro to programming... im reading it. Not that ill be programming mods by tomorrow, but I think its a good thing to know at least the basics.

Heh, yeah, programming isn't my forte either. In fact, I think I got to "hello world" before I got totally confused. But luckly, it seems GOOD animators are in short supply. Even in movies it seems like the animators have no sense of gravity, inertia, or inverse kinematics. So, at least I'm skilled at one thing that's not very common to find among mods.

Oh, and since you haven't played much of the real pencil and paper Shadowrun games I can advise you on what you would and wouldn't find in the universe (and my friend knows it better than I do...actually he's good at drawing too, maybe I could have him make a few reference sketches for us). Obviously it won't actually be "Shadowrun" for copyright reasons, but there's no reason it can't be very, very similar. I'm suprised Microsoft hasn't made a new Shadowrun game yet, they've made games for FASA's Battletech and Crimson Skies universes, why leave out Shadowrun?

So...after the rest of the projects are done...who wants to make a Trespasser mod for Farcry with me :D

Well, another thing I can do is make websites, so I can make us a site once we get some ideas together. That way we can at least pretend to have a solid project before the game comes out :D

BTW, the HL2 engine is going to be absolutely awesome for modding according to this:
http://collective.valve-erc.com/index.php?faq=source_mod_faq

I cant wait to get my hands on that game :naughty:

I will be mapping, voice acting, writing the entire storyline and script and composing the musical score, and recording it, all the instruments myself.

Yes, others may do more work than me, but I will be working to my full extent as well.

not to put a damper on things...have you looked for other star trek themed mods and see if paramount allows them to use their intellectual property? a system shock mod was recently shut down by EA games...lucasarts used to shut down star wars mods back in the day... some copyright owners are real protective of their intellectual properties and others aren't...it'd be worth while to get an official answer before you get too much done...it'd be a shame to put a lot of effort into the project only to get a cease and desist letter from a nameless lawyer...

good luck on the project though

True, especially with actual Star Trek games out there. But, since the developer that was handling all Star Trek games recently canceled their contract with Paramount, they might be a little bit more lenient about Star Trek based mods. But if that idea doesn't work out, I hear that Capcom doesn't mind mods being based on their franchises (at least that's what they said in an email to the Resident Evil: The Escape team, as long as you don't use actual assets from the games they apperently don't have any problems with a mod based on their games).

I think most companies are realizing the impact that the mod community can have. There are still a couple that are still being very unmovable in terms of protecting their copyrights... I hear the james bond franchise is heavily protected... i remember a couple of star gate mods were shut down but i've seen some newer ones up now....

if anything, a well done, professional, and respectful (of the source material) mod can only be a positive since it brings more attention to the brand name...

on the subject of star trek...elite force 2 was an awesome game that was sorely overlooked...

the current star trek show on now is :barf:

Ok, im a bit confused. Where is a reliable source for finding out who owns the rights to names\franchises?

I went here:http://www.copyright.gov/records/

And according to that, FASA corporation made various copyrights from 92 to 95... but they are gone, and there are NO other Shadowrun related copyrights. How does this kind of thing work? Im assuming either something isnt up to date or this isnt what im looking for. I was just curious as to who owned the rights as of right now. As I said before WizKids owns the rights to the "Shadowrun Duels" game, but I dont even see them on there.

Help me out here...

EDIT: Ok, I had to look at trademarks. I found it... there are various Shadowrun logos and such here, but... this is interesting:
http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=doc&state=faigo1.2.5

Its true, Microsoft now owns the rights to Shadowrun electronic games.

I wonder what they would charge if someone wanted to purchase the rights from them :eek2:

Also, if you click the "check status" button, it shows the history of activity for the trademark. In 2001 they renewed it for 6 years... I wonder if they are actually working on a game...?

Woa! I looked more into the info on there, Microsoft is based in Redmond, Washington. Thats one of the areas IN SHADOWRUN. Thats really wierd. They are probably going to put themselves into the game if they make one. Replacing Mitsuhama with Microsoft or something like that
