Almost every day for a while now, the mouse pointer will freeze up on me. The mouse itself moves, but the pointer is locked in position. This happens at various times whether or not I'm actually using the mouse. I have a Microsoft Optical wheel mouse, but I've used other mice to see if it was the Optical and the same problem occured. I've had the mouse in both PS/2 and USB ports and still it happens. I have to reboot to get the pointer to move again.
I have a Gigabyte FX5900XT and am now running with 66.72 drivers which seems to have helped some but only in so far as now when the pointer locks up it doesn't lock up totally. Meaning that if I move the mouse, the pointer takes about 5 to 7 seconds to "catch up" with where I moved the mouse.
I have the latest BIOS for both the mobo (Abit AT7-MAX2) and the video card and I have the latest 4in1 going. The card is not overheating at all, and I get no other video problems.

Any ideas? This one is making me crazy.

have the task manager open and run the mouse around, see if there are any cpu or memory spikes during the times it lags. Task manager is ctrl alt del in xp...

Thanks for the response. No, nothing spiking either in CPU or Memory. Any other suggestions?
BTW, I'm a computer upgrade and repair specialist, but this is the first time I've run across this problem.

Does it do it in safe mode? That would narrow it down to a drive rproblem of some sort and not a hw conflict. thats my next thought

Ok, I'll give SafeMode a try and see what happens. Thanks again. ;)

Ran the system in SafeMode most of today and no problems with the mouse. So you think it may be a hardware conflict? Probably with the video card, eh?

Did you try takeing all unnecessary hardware sound card , network , ect ect leave only essential parts and see if problem persist ;)

err, ecactly what i was going to say. Methinks it may be a driver conflict off the top of my head

Ok so I disabled various hardware one at a time, and still no joy. But you know what? Problem is solved! On a completely unrelated project, I moved one of my four harddrives from IDE 3 slave to IDE 1 slave and the problem went away.

Haven't got a bloody clue why it did that, but Hey! I ain't complaining.

Rampant, thanks for your suggestions mate. It's much appreciated. (urock)
