Hi there
About to plonk down some serious money for a 6800GT and am wondering, from yur collective experience, whether I will notice a significant difference between my current card (FX5900) and the 6800GT ?? By that I mean IQ, frame rates etc.
I imagine it should on latest games (Far Cry, Doom 3 etc) but what about DX8 titles ?
Running on a P42.8 with 2x512mb DDRSDRAM

Many thanks

You should be able to push older titles to the max if you choose to upgrade. Its great being able to run old games at 1600x1200 /w 4xAA/8xAF on without a stutter in Frame Rate.

There is a huge difference between the cards, I noticed one on my Radeon 9800pro -> 6800GT upgrade.

Me too, coming from a 9800 pro wich was faster than the 5900 I can now play all games including the new ones with at least 4aa and 8 af.

It's definatly worth the upgrade, it's at least twice the performance.

I returned to Nvidia from an Radeon 9800XT and I noticed a difference and a huge one at that. I've also noticed that for me there is little frame rate drop at all if I run at 16af instead of the usual 8af. So I'm running most of my games at 1280*1024 4aa 16af. Hell I even had CoD:UO at 8aa 16af, but the frames did drop down below my liking in some spots. But still quite playable.

NV35, NV38 = 1 quad GPU with architecture more geared towards texture manipulation/sampling.

nv40 = 4 quad GPU with architecture geared more towards pixel shader intensive games.

not even though in theory NV40 doesn't have the texture sampling, manipulation capabilties of nv3X, the numbers (ie 4 quad processing blocks) make up and exceed the NV3X texturing capabilties.

..also texturing intensive games = pre DX9 games the opposite should be true of DX9 games

pls correct me if I am wrong.

I went from a 9700 Pro (a more capable card than 5900) to a 6800 Ultra and i cannot belive the difference in performance, it's that good :)

From a 5900, 6800GT means atleast 2 fold performance increase. Get it now.

There is no comparison, believe me.I had a Leadtek 5900U, and Leadtek 5900XT (burned the ultra :() and there is no comparison whatsoever. The GT rulezzzzzzzzzz
Get one now

i had a fx5900 and upped to a 6800GT after a few weeks - i must say the difference is impressive.
maybe not so dramatic with unreal 2004 as they all ran it on full speed with everything on but with for eg. doom 3 i could play it on medium @ 1200x1000 and that has changed to ultra 1200x1000 with all stuff on (2Xaa but can handle 4xaa but lowers the frame a bit) - considering the fx5900 was a slide show with that setting on my pc

far cry could muster high on my fx5900 @ 1200x1000 while the GT can do happily 1200x1000 with everything full belt

actually i dont think i have found a game i cant run happily full speed 4Xaa (8xaa makes it chug tho)

I have a 5900fx computer with the same board as my sig computer. The 6800u blows away the 5900 in benches and fps. Would expect similar results with the 6800gt.

Thks guys.............yu talked me into it ( not that I needed that much persuasion, the reviews and yur comments just confirm it all)

Thanks again

UT2k4 DX8 no AA/AF - FX5900XT vs 6800NU

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=33894

as you can see the 6800 doesn't do much for DX8 games that an FX5900 can't already accomplish. However if you read further down in the thread when AA/AF is enabled the 6800 truely out shines the FX5900. And for DX9 games the 6800 will blow away the FX5900.

Except for the fact that the 5900 is using a faster CPU, more Ram, and still loses, and that game is CPU limited ANYWAYS at that res.

fucnny, this was my exact switch too. lol, i do a LOT of benchmarking, still no tdone yet tho gonna brteak 13 k soon with my gt, but yeah, it literally IS 2 x the performance, than som if you keep OCing it.

One of the EASIEST cards i know of that can OC to its better, aka the ultra. it freaking AUTO DETECTS to past ultra speeds. so it is DEFINJITLY a perform increase. and to back up the 2x thoery, everywere i got 56 or 300 fps, or even 600 fps. is now double, if you run 3dmark 03 youll see what i mean, it now flies to 120, 600, and 1700 in some cases!

Loses? Did you not look at the chart or the thread? The FX5900XT outperforms the 6800 except when the A64 3000 is overclocked to 2.2ghz, and of course when AA/AF is enabled. And furthermore UT2k4 is not entirely CPU dependent, good luck running it well on anything less than a TI4200.

UT2K4 needs at least a 5900u to run it the way
it should be run. ;)

But for me I'll take my GT and run it at 4xAA and 8xAF.
The IQ is so sweet on the 6800. :D
