Seems to be a USB driver issue. Are you using a USB modem by any chance?

Also try the Stop code on the BSOD on the MS support site.

I had a similar problem with my cable modem. This was happening all the time when I had it connected with USB. I then bought myself an UTP cable and connected it thru my network card and now it is working just fine and I guess it is also more reliable now.

r2d2d3d4d5: It is a USB modem. Ive looked for patches, updates and drivers on BT and Microsoft's sites but no luck.

It doesnt happen all the time, mostly when i turn my pc completly off and startup again. If the BSOD comes up i turn off and on again and it will connect fine so i then put my pc on stanby so that it connects to the same IRQ as before. Or am i wrong in thinking that??

Cheers

Which modem is it? I'm guessing a driver problem, either bad install or bad driver.

You should also try the website of the manufacturer of your modem. They will likely have update drivers. If it's labelled a BT modem then there will still probably be something on it that will identify the original manufacturer. You should also try contacting BT as they might have a solution. But the best long term solution IMO is to plug your modem into your network port and forget about these problems (if your modem supports that function).

Despite the title on the BSOD this is not an classic IRQ error. For one thing your USB modem will not have an IRQ. Your USB controller will but I would not expect the assigned IRQ to change because of a reboot. So I don't think your putting your computer into standby should make much difference. Here (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_ottj.asp) is MS's explanation of the error.

Smokey: Its a BT Voyager 105 ADSL modem.

r2d2d3d4d5: Thanks for all your help. I just want to ask one more thing....In the BSOD it says my system has been shutdown to prevent damage. Can it cause damage to my system??

Cheers guys :)

Here (http://www.voyager.bt.com/usb105/prodinfo.htm) is BT's page for the modem. You can also download drivers from that page. If they are more recent than your drivers then they might be of some help.

The BSOD seems to be saying that any damage to your computer has been prevented so in theory you do not have anything to worry about. If your computer were restarting without a BSOD then you would probably have a lot more to worry about. I would not just live with the BSODs however. Although Windows XP is very resilient (especially when compared with previous versions of Windows) sudden stops/BSODs (caused by faulty drivers) have been associated with damaged Windows instillations/damaged file-systems/loss of work/etc.
