MDK9.0 problems

OK, so I had played around trying to get the Nvidia drivers working on my system(Athlon 1gig, 32< geforce 2 MX Mandrake 9.0) and nevr managed to get past the error 'No screens found!". So thinking that all my playing had screwed something up I fell back to M$ ways and reinstalled MDK. As Thorshammer had kindly emailed the compiled RPMs I thought I would have no problems...

However, I still get this sodding screens found but none have a useable configuration.. My XF86Config-4 file is as follows.

Mandrake, right?

Add alias /dev/nvidia* NVdriver to /etc/modules.conf, run depmod -a (both as root), and try again.

Thanks for this, I have checked in modules.conf, the entries you specified were there already.

Last night in order to have a complete 'known' I reinstalled MDK, didn't even start X, compiled the drivers from the tar files, edited the XFConfig-4 file and tried again. I had even set the monitor to generic 1024x768 @70. Unfortunately I am still getting the same error

Screens found etc.......

No screens found.

I have checked in /dev and I have nvidia0 and nvidia1 and nvidiactl however the nvidia_check script suggests that I should have nvidia2 and 3 as well. I have seen somewhere on the net(maybe in here) that you don't need these for it to work, Can anyone check theirs and let me know. Also can someone post the size of NVDriver so I can check it has compiled OK. Is there anyway I can check this module outside of starting X? I have just about exausted all ideas I have had, Any other thoughts anyone?


This is now really annoying me as all I want to do is get these sodding drivers installed.(well that and configure my wireless LAN)

Is there anything relevant in /var/log/messages or in the output of dmesg?

You can try booting to text mode, then running (as root) modprobe NVdriver, and see if it spits out any errors, or if any errors get logged to /var/log/messages.

No, you don't need /dev/nvidia[23], unless you have a third or fourth nVidia video card installed...

I would be able to post the size of the 3123 NVdriver if my card wasn't currently overheating after about a half hour of use. As it is, I can't really boot that computer hardly at all without that happening, so yeah. 2960's NVdriver is 1114400, though, if you're using that version for some reason.

The modprobe works no problems, I have tried using 2960 from a clean install, my 2960 NVdriver is near 1114400 but definately not exactly that(Mmm, this be the problem?).

I emailed Nvidia last night(I even got a response within 15 minutes from a real person!) who has made a few suggestions which I tried last night but they didn't make a difference. in response he asked me to check the kernel version against the kernel source(all OK) and to do a insmod from the build directory. Which I did with no errors but still no joy.

I don't have a clue what to try next.

SOLVED it!

My BIOS was set to PnP aware OS and NO to assign irq to VGA, sort these and it works!

However, there is no option to set an IRQ to VGA in my BIOS. According to my amazingly spotty motherboard documentation, an IRQ is supposed to be assigned automatically (hence the absence of an option in the BIOS). I think the problem may be tied in with the onboard video controller (intel 82810), but i have no idea where to start looking or how to solve the problem. (again, according to the mb documentation, if a PCI video card is plugged in, then the onboard video is supposed to be disabled automatically.) The card i have plugged in is a TNT2 16MB PCI. TIA for any help!

I would check what video controllers are showing up in Harddrake. Are both present or just one? Also check the contents of /var/log/messages as well as the X log. It seems the error message that you are getting covers a very wide range of possible problems so you could be suffering from one of many.



What make of M/board is it? have you tried looking online for a better manual? Is there a setting for Init VGA, most Mboards will support more than one VGA card you need to specify the master(particularly as you are using a PCI card whilst the onboard one is AGP. Which version of the drivers are you using, did you compile teh drivers yourself or download teh rpms? I can email them to you is you want them.

Try posting the contents of the XF log and messages from around the point that you try to start X.

Just wanted to say thank you for getting back to me. It looks like it just wasnt compiling correctly from the RPM. so i tarred instead and it worked perfectly. For anyone out there who might care, this config worked on a generic OEM board using an intel 810 chipset with integrated graphics and an nVidia Vanta PCI graphics "expansion" card and a 533 Celeron processor. GLXgears at a steady 600+ FPS...oh the POWER!!! :D
