It looks like now that we are seeing how CPU limited this game will probably be, The advantage ATI has it seems much slimmer than before.

The high res AA/AF are pretty nice, It shows that those latest Nvidia optimisations are really doing there work. I really have been wanting to do some work with this demo. But considering my card is dead atm. I havent had any opurtunity at all ;\

Yes i looks good for Nvidia in HL2 (source). Wonder where the 30/40% lead to ati went :)

Anyone know if CS:S is using SM3.0? HL2 is said to be using it so if CS:S is, we know where the 30%/40% lead went! :p

SM 3.0 will come in a patch :)

well we KNOW where it went, masked by CPU bottleneck..
VST shows ATI leads, but the VST isnt using CPU that much..

Question is if HL2 SP will load the CPU at levels near CS:S, or not..
If it isnt, lower CPU load might put ATI ahead, but HL2 has the physics AND AI to run.. so.. who knows..
At any rate, both sides show strong performance anyhow..

So far nvidia is winning in CS Source..we dont know what HL2 will be like, but we all know CS Source is gonna be played alot more as multiplayer game, and that is what i actually care about, its good to see the GT again beating the x800pro, this is very good news for those GT users :).

We also see the GT beating the x800XT/PE a few times, and this happens on xbitlabs as well.

Whats good about nvidia this time is that they have a very strong opengl and d3d, while ati still cant keep up with nvidia in opengl...makes you wonder which card is better to keep.

So far .. the GeForce 6 series is doing very good on Source . the real test will be in HL2 itself though .

True thats when all the nice effects start appearing as well other factors such as enemy AI, physics etc take it's toll.

Until Nvidia fixes the shimmering issue ATI is winning and i will continue to reccomend them to my customers. Once they fix that, that WILL change. Theyve shown no indication to fix it however.

Whoa where did that huge 30% ATI advantage go? Has Nvidia really gained all that performance so quickly in a new driver rev?

What shimmering issue?

And what do you mean "ATI is winning"?

They tested with 4.9 driver which still has that 256-meg adressing bug (which drops performance in high detail settings) so "final" result is not known yet. But whatever, all cards seem to do just fine in this game.

Shouldn't this post be in another forum?

Besides way too early to say who will be faster:

With this in mind we should note that we tested with ATIís traditional CATALYST 4.9 release without the Control Center installed or ATIís A.I. technology, which ATI plans to release later this month with improved Half-Life 2 performance.

Isn't selective quoting just fabulous? :D

Firingsquad also said this:

At the same time, multiple beta ForceWare 66 drivers have been leaked on the Internet with similar claims of offering improved D3D performance.

Hmm ATi needs AI now to compete, bring backs memories of the Fx line :nanahump:

The framerates are high enough to use 6xAA on an ATI card though

wishing you didn't trade your GT in for an X800pro now tyranus?

I was suprised that FiringSquad used Catalyst 4.9 when the beta Catalyst 4.11's are readily available on ATi's website. This is about as bad as using the official Forceware 61.77 versus beta 4.11's. I think the results from beta Forceware 65/66 vs beta Cat 4.11 would have made this even closer - like 50/50 or way too close to call.

Is there an article about the actual game performance increases from that supposed bug? An article comparing gaming performance with Cat4.9 and 4.11beta would be nice.

I personally haven't seen the shimmering but I may not own any games that have it.

All the cards are close, looks like the 6800GT is still the best bang for the buck.
