The demo features the latest version of the PAIN Engine and with it, the latest enhancements from the 1.35 update. In the popular "Military Base" level, players will enjoy effects such as heat and haze distortion, light blooms, per pixel specular mapping, new shader effects and tweaks for the latest video cards. All in all, a mere taste of what the PAIN Engine will offer in the expansion pack, Painkiller: Battle out of Hell.

I remember reading that this game will have SM3.0 support, can anyone confirm this? As soon as I get the game downloaded, I will run benchmarks, and upload a few screenies. Maybe if someone has an x800xt, or pro they can do the same.

How do you run the benchmarks in Painkiller? Fraps? Is there something built into the game?

Hopefully there is a built in timedemo... if not I guess fraps :( but that would be way inaccurate

Um. If we already own the full game and patch 1.35, are these SM 3.0 effects already activated or is the demo "special".

Well since it says it features the "latest" version of the pain engine, I'm assuming it has more to it than the normal game....basically giving you a taste of what to expect with the expansion pack.

It runs by itself. Let me just start by first saying. Performance is really bad. 1600x1200 2x/4x I'm barley cranking out 25fps. Gonna try to lower it now.

Here is my review guys, first of all, performance is terrible. Sometimes its a good 50fps or so, sometimes its not, 25fps. I just cannot figure out why my peformance is so terrible. My 9800 Pro on the original game ran better than this. These are all at 1280x1024 2x/aa

Is that OpenEXR HDR lighting? If so that would account for the performance loss - i heard with it enabled you are more likely to be able to play 1024x768 or 1280x1024 with no AA in order to get good performance.

btw, i thought the expansion pack "Battle Out of Hell" was the painkiller game to feature sm3.0?

Performance is actually higher outside than indoors for some reason. Small rooms have huge performance loss while huge outdoor areas run smooth for me... Anyone else getting this?

This shouldnt be any different than painkiller retail + 1.3.5 should it?

Performance is great here, running it at 1600x1200 2x/16x, and never goes below 40.......usually the frame rates stick around 60 or so, which is wierd. I've never played a fps on computer b4 that it felt silky smooth even when dipping into the 40s.

Tribes V uses light glares and soft focus specular lighting (or whatever) and runs great using PS2.0. Booo for painkiller.

Completely unplayable frame rates for me. 20 - 40 with intense slow downs and constant mouse lag. I get 120 fps in the retail game, so they really messed it up IMO.

performance is great here also - smooth with only a tiny bit of lowering of fps when it gets really hectic

The specs of your machine are conspicuously absent from this post. I find it difficult to believe that you go from 120fps to 20-40fps at the same resolution.

I get the same also... 20-40fps at times, other times its like 120.

Good question....

It is not a demo of the Battle out of Hell expansion. It is just a slightly reworked map (Military Base) from the first retail game. They've added a few special effects and put "Doom 3 shine" on the textures at a massive, huge performance cost of about 70% in my case.

My specs are AMD XP2700+ on an nForce 2 board with 1 gig PC2700 and a BFG 6800 GT. I run regular Painkiller at a very smooth 90 - 150 frames per second. I'd say about 120 average. This demo with the same settings (or even lower) and even some of the new ones like Bloom turned off runs at a pathetic 20 - 40 with peaks around 60 (staring at the wall) and it goes into slow motion in intense fights or around lots of shiny surfaces, like the one jet plane you can walk up into with the truck and a crate inside. The mouse is like a lagging, sloppy, wet noodle all the time. It's terrible.

To make it playable, I would have to run medium-low graphic settings @ 800x600 and it would look much uglier than the regular game. Flock that! I hope this is not an indication of what to expect from the new BooH Expansion.

Put another vote down for bad performance (Especially compared to the original Painkiller). :(
