well i own since 1 year a dual xp 1700 with tyan tiger MP and i'm very satisfied with it.

it's rock stable since u choose a good cooling (like volcano 7+ or 9 ) with a good case (like antec 1040) and there's not a lot of issue with hardware compatibilies ( maybe a problem with pionner dvd drive in udma mode .. small usb issues with mpx chipset but i'm not sure)

after it depend all in your activities .. if u don't use any SMP friendly softwares , i don't think it could be so usefull for you, except for the fact that a smp system is always far more responsive when u use a lot of applications in a same time

i use at least 3 or 4 softwares witch use smp properly and it really worth the cost.

Anyway i think i won't return anymore to 1-cpu config, when u have tried ... :)

if u want more info on smp just check www.2cpu.com

go with double Athlon system, assuming your programs support double processor systems(will tkae advantage of the second cpu).

I would wait for hyperthreading enabled P4's, that way you should have the best of both worlds.

Either way: if the application doesn't support hyperthreading OR SMP then you will not see any performance gains from either feature.

A dual XP 2400+ will outperform the first HT enabled P4s, so if you must get something now, get the dual XP 2400+s. Check out the forum at Aces. Multithreaded apps benefit SMP more than SMT anyway. If you can wait, you will find faster HT enabled P4s, and faster AXPs, at cheaper prices.
