I am thinking of upgrading to an XP 2600 around christmas time and to limit the damage to my wallet I wanted to resuse my old cooler if possible. I have a Taisol CGK760002. So I checked AMD's web page and Taisols home page but it says up to XP 2100 max.

I really wanted to keep with Taisol as I like the triple fins to connect it to the motherboard. So I checked the CGK760172 which is rated up to XP 2600. Thing is though, looking at the two coolers specs... they are identical! Maybe I am missing something but the fan size and fan speed are identical. Heatsink material is identical and Max air flow is identical.

So what I don't understand is why my cooler is not suitable for an XP 2600 but an identical cooler with a different model number is suitable. I wonder if this is just a way of getting more money out of people and how many other manufacturers do the same.

Any thoughts?

exactly the same, same pic too. only thing different is one copper is using pads, and the other uses grease. i doubt that makes a huge difference if you get some arctic silver. the taisol you have should handle 2600 easy. looks like they are trying to rip people off and use one product and sell to more than one market. on the other hand, those who notice this can get a good deal on the cheaper of the two. i don't think many other manufacturers do this.

Yeah, I always scrape the thermal stuff off the bottom and use Arctic Silver anyway. Its good news for me anyway because I am relying on a price drop when the new 2700s/2800s come out so that I can afford a 2600... I didn't really want to buy a new cooler on top of that.
