hi im about to buy a 6800GT and this was at the top of my list.

the question i have relates to its cooling solution. (help)

now the pictures ive seen in all the reviews show it w/ this

http://www.gamers-depot.com/hardware/video_cards/lead_bfg/bfg/3_s.jpg

now i was about to buy it from
http://www.buyxtremegear.com/vc129129.html

when i noticed the heatsink & fan setup was different so i check their site (mag)
http://www.bfgtech.com/6800GTOC.html

and notice it's different now.

so my question is; does anyone have any experience w/ the new setup? is it louder, quieter, cooler, hotter, etc...

MUCH MUCH THANKS

err...this has been discussed before...

The new copper cooler performs worse than the reference cooler on avg. Not sure about noise though. I would know...I got it!

Its like a dumb model. Looks good but not much upstairs...know what I mean.

crapola. anyone know of any place i can get the old model?

you happen to have a link to the previous discussion?

so since you have the newer cooling design; is it loud?

Do a forum "search" on BFG.
There are many threads on it.

There are no BFG's around with the ref coolers.
All are custom now.

I'm just putting a NV5 on my BFG.
But all and all I love mine. Not a bad OCer
for stock cooling. 415/1150. Stock voltage. ;)

i did search, but i couldnt find a thread about it.

so do you have the new or old one?

so the NV silencer 5 went on nice & easy? no modification needed i hope. i dont have a dremmel. is it cooler w/ the NV5 than the stock setup (new or old)?

thanks. im thinking ill go for it & just throw on the NV5 if the temps can be kept in check.

I liked my BFG 6800 OC GT when I bought it for three reasons. #1 I paid 307.00 before taxes for it #2 it had amazing performance #3 it had a bling-tastic cooler on it.

Well while I paid less for the cooler, the temps scared the crap out of me. I ended up watercooling my entire rig as a result (my system was near overheating BEFORE I threw in the 89c card) Now I wish I had gotten a different brand and I might have ended up saving money more money in the long run.

kinda of an off topic reply but how the heck can a vid card be considered loud?

are you telling me not to buy the BFG? it will run hot? ill be paying 400 smackers plus tax on it. i dont want to buy an unstable card.

will a NV5 for 30 bucks fix this problem?

The card should be fine out of the box albeit a little warmer running than the ref cooler but nothing to worry about. That is nothing to worry about unless you case has terrible cooling/air flow. If you do a search for the threads on this you will see most cases the new cooler only runs a few degrees hotter in most cases, hardly anythign to worry about. I have a ref 6800 GT OC so I don't speak from personal exp just what I have read here and on other forums.
Buy the card see how YOUR temps are, then decide if you need it a little cooler and pick up an NV5. Make sense?

well i have an Antec 1080 AMG case.

2 fans on the 430W PSU

2 fans blowing out the back

and there's one side fan, but i dont keep it plugged in because it's loud as hell. antec designed it so it makes the side vibrate; very annoying.

You want to make sure you have a pair of intake fans on the front of your case to bring cool air in. The Antec case should have two 80 mm open brackets. Pick up a pair of Vantec Stealth fans (~$10 each), put them in so the air blows towards the back of your case and your overall system temperatures should fall pretty dramatically.

I might have gotten one that didn't have the hs mounted correctly but I had 59c idle and 89c under load. Once watercooled that is now in the high 40's idle and 58c under load. This had nothing to do with the cooling in my case. I had a 120mm and an 80mm intake and two 80mm output fans to compliment the dual 80mm fan PS. All cables were tucked away and not blocking the airflow.

I just don't think it's right to pay the same amount of money for a card and get less performance. So to answer your question, no I would not buy the BFG and pay retail for it unless they impove the design.

IF you have any heat problems then yes.... The NV5 with some AS5
will fix it right up for 30 bucks. :D :ORDER:

I LOVE my BFG GToc. :nanahump:

I have the new heatsink design. Mine runs about 60c Idle and 74c after hours of gaming.I dont have any stability issues.

As far as sound goes though. I used to think the card was really quiet until I bought a case that uses two 120 mm fans. Now the card is definitely the loudest thing in my case.

It kind of makes a sound like a 7200 RPM drive makes when its reading or writing only its very faint. I'm hoping as it wears in this will go away.

If you use 80mm fans in your case I doubt you would be able to hear it.

But the BFG's lifetime warranty at overclocked speeds has to count for something?

I have a BFG 6800GT OC with the new HSF design in my wifes pc. It runs extremely well and does NOT run much warmer then a reference desing HSF. The difference in temps is only 2-3 degrees C....nothing to worry about. The idle temps run 57c and load never goes over 74c. This is with a side case fan tho. I also have a vantec dual fan pci card under the GT which helped dropped the idel temps from initially at 61c down to 56-57c. The BFG cards are good and you wont have any worries with it, especially with a lifetime warranty(as long as you dont remove the HSF....however, if you do put an NV5 on it, keep the hsf from the card in a box and dont lose it in case something happens).

I also have the new cooler on my BFG 6800GT. It runs just fine and is not loud. Temps are 58c idle - 70c load.

Mine stutters like mad though. Get an ATI.

With the right case airflow the newer BFG cooler seemed just fine. It sure is a cool looking piece with the chrome cover and blu LED's. To bad i dont have a window and im using a swifty waterblock instead anyway :D

I have the same BFG 6800 GT OC.

Running Idle i'm getting 59c and at a load 77c.

It's not that bad. What I want to know is... Are the fans on the custom cooler crap ass sleeve barrings or high quality ball barrings?!?

I hate crappy ass fans that stop or make noise after 6 months. :lame: They should kill the sob who invented sleeve barring fans! Utter CRAP! :bash:

Its a good card by a good company. U wont be dissapointed.

If heat is a really large issue then an ultra would run the higher clocks at lower temps.
