20% eh? I still haven't seen proof of that claim.

Valve's answering the questions and they didnt mention where that 20% comes from. Im sure thats just from the stress test. I doubt in actual gameplay we will see that much. Remember all the money Ati Payed to Valve and thats why you wont see any nVidia cards recommended in their recommended pc's ;)

Reduced bumpmapping on the TI4200? That sucks. And why are they disabling bumpmapping on the DX7 path? Last I checked, a GF1 card from 1999 could do bumpmapping  . Also they are a bit wrong: the "20% better performance" on ATI cards only applies to the x800pe vs. the 6800u: the x800pro and 6800gt are neck-and-neck going by the stress test (which I doubt is a very good indicator of HL2 performance anyway).

This is good news for my friend with a 1.5Ghz Athlon, 256mb, and a Radeon 9600.

20% seems kinda high. My guess is thats only during extreme situations when there is a huge draw distance and many shaders are used.

I generally lurk around here and dont post much as you can see . So I am a (newb)

This is ATI $$$$ at work here. Valve said that the VST is the toughest workout a video card is going to get ,but a 6800U can get 90fps easy at 1600x1200 4xaa,16xaf which means that the game is going to be really cpu limited. I see no way that X800 being 20% faster in game. Maybe in benchmarks it will be but who really plays a benchmark :lame:
Also while HL2 has a few gee-whiz features in graphics the major draw of the game is the realistic physics.
From the screens the graphics seem okayish. So it all points to being pretty cpu limited. Maybe they should have taken some money from Intel or AMD which would lead to some truth in their statements.
Anyway CS source was pretty disappointing . I was expecting something a bit more innovative than that but I guess valve didnt want to alienate all those 12 year olds with pentium IIs.
I am really crossing my fingers and hoping that HL2 wont disappoint like Cs source or the engine demo called Doom 3. The reviews have lifted my spirit up on this game a bit though :)

First it was 40%, then 30%.. now 20%..
if they dont release that game soon it will be 10% lead for Nvidia.. hehe

http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread/t-12846.html

Gabe claimed the X800 is 40% faster than the GeForce 6800 for Half Life 2 and confirmed that we’ll see Half Life 2 this summer.

http://pc.ign.com/articles/535/535268p1.html

Doug specifically stated that the ATI x800 was the card of choice amongst many of the testers, as it ran roughly about 30% faster than Nvidia's best cards.

Yeah, nice info. But how low can they go at point 12, to not even list nvidia alternatives. But like recent articles/previews kinda hint at ; HL2 framerate performance @ high res might be quite dependant on CPU as well.

In any case ; when I have it installed, I'll start it up @ 1280 x 1024 with 4AA and 4 AF (don't care that much for more AF). With my pc specs, stated in sig, I should see very nice framerates.

JakUp is the man at finding some cool stuff. I doubt this, but if CS:S is running better on a 6800 than a X800, you think HL2 will produce the same results? I think it's going to be too close to tell. ATI and Valve stuck this deal way back when and did not expect (sorry, my opinion) the 6800 to be better and faster than any ATI product. Any agree?

Well with the latest forceware its the opposite arround now. My XFX6800U runs the VST a little faster then my X800XT PE 134 vs 120 in 1280x1024 16xAF waterreflect on all. The 6800U has decent shaderunits.

i think as new drivers came out for nvidia they may have boosted performance in hl2 (as well as everything else). I saw this on my 6800u every time a driver came out, it just got a little bit faster. every claim they made about performance gaps between ati & nvidia may have been based on old drivers. I wouldn't worry too much, when the game is released there will be a driver that will perform better then what they predict.

oh man, that crossbow looks SWEEEEEEET!

Shoot yeah it does, it's even got a scope on it!!! :nanahump: This game is going to rock. Today is supposivly the day that HL2 is going gold so I guess we'll see what happens.

I suspect this is the case because the lead time for magazines is at least 2-3 months, six weeks if you really hustle. There have been plenty of new drivers leaked since that interview took place. I personally suspect the performance difference will not be more than 5-10% either way.

Shoot yeah it does, it's even got a scope on it!

The crossbow in the original HL had a scope too. :p

1. Daddy likes him some cross bow! Me wants it!

2. Is it legal to post scans of magazines like that?

3. Guy asks about 64bit and PCI-e, but not about SM 3.0 or RT-HDR lighting.

4. still a good read...Thanks!

Well, the last time that I saw claims on ATI beating NVIDIA in HL2, it was when the ATI 9800 XT was released. NVIDIA kinda slacked with the 5xxx series (sorry 5xxx owners, I owned a 5200, pretty sad). Looks like ATI is going to get PWNED by NVIDIA.
