Your temps are fine. Anything under 100c is fine.

It seems your card just runs cooler in 3D mode.
The fan kicks on high in 3D is why.
I would not worry about it you r fine. :)

U can use gainwards expert tool to raise the fan speed in 2D, however I find it very odd that it would run hotter idle then at load. Might wanna try reinstalling drivers or use a different set of drivers to see if it behaves the same way. Wife's BFG 6800GT with the 2 small fan design runs cooler idle then load so your PNY definitely should as well with the reference cooler.
Wifes GT runs 57-58c idle and 68c load.
Do you have adequate case cooling? Maybe you have a hot spot near the vid card while in 2D since the fan isnt running at full 100% speed, but does in 3D thus moving more air and eliminating a possible hot spot that might exist. What case are you using, how many and where areyour case fans? Do you have a side case fan?
