Now that AMD and Intel are readying their dual core chips, what do you think will be the next step?
quad core seems the logical choice, right?
think again...
The next step will probably be more like 1 1/2 core.
Since most everyday aplications don't benefit much from multiprocessing we may see a simpler design in future AMD and Intel multi core processors.
The design could be for instance a complete k8 core + k8 with a simpler design that handles the tasks that benefit the most from multiprocessiong like video encoding/decoding, DCC, games, floating point and the like.
I think that in the future we will see more like on-die co-processing, where several cores are optimized to handle specific operations somewhat like the PS2 does now.
We may not see a 10ghz chip soon but that doesn't mean we won't get faster processors.
