View Full Version : GT6800 driver bug test (shimmer)

I have made a small app that shows a minimal amount of instructions that reveils a serious bug. Don't know who to send it to or who can test it ?

Anyway on most of my HW (ATI,Irix,GForce 4,5) I don't get any flicker but on GT6800 HW i get a massive flicker.

I have a thread about this on OpenGL forum as well and here is a url to the download.


To see the bug run a number of minitest.bat The small app goes so fast so you can't see the flicker. However a driver developer should be able to fix the bug with this app.

To see the bug in action you can also run the maxitest.bat It will show a larger model. If you run it on your HW without flicker, you have no problem with the bug. If you have, you will see a massive flicker..

So if you want to tell me the results, I would be happy, but most happy if I could get hold of a developer of the driver that could fix the bug for me..

Thanks for the link. Tried it on an Evga 6800GT with 66.72 drivers.

No flickering.

Evga 6800 ultra, 66.81 drivers. No flicker at all.

maxitest gives me a crazy flicker
minitest barely shows anything, its mostly empty except for a few polygons
fullspeed seems pretty much ok, looks like the shadows do some wierd things but i dont think its a bug

Im using 65.73 right now.

Its possible that flickering manifest it self at certain AA modes and AF !

To see the flicker in the minitest.bat app, you need to run two or three instances of the program.

The maxitest is a lot heavier, then there is massive flicker.

The fullspeed doesn't wait several frames between each update so the flicker becomes a smooth shimmer

There is no AA enabled etc. Its just a mixture of normal material updates and lighting on/off

Remember to run several instances of the minitest app to see the results as it goes so fast and doesn't load the HW

Its unusual to see an end user go to so much trouble - deserves to be rewarded.

Running 61.77

Minitest gives parts of polygons and a couple of them flicker. Mostly a blank screen.

Maxtest has a lot of flickering. Front seats, front frame, and part of the right side are flickering.

Minitest stopped flickering after i set AA and AF to app pref, and turned off texture clamp. I always set everything to high quality.

When running the 65.73's I got lots of shimmering on the maxitest, none on the fulltest, and the basic blank screen no shimmering on the minitest.

Swapped to the 66.81's, no shimmering on any test.

I need to test the 66.81's some more on different games.

for me 66.81/anythign gives this shimmering effect, i think this is mostly noticed in cs source stress test in the final scene with all the tv screens the background wall is soo obvious, the effect is there alot.

CS Source does loose about 90% shimmering when you switch to High Quality, but staying on Quality/All 3 Opt off results in very bad shimmering. I would stay on High Quality, but on a 32player map it would suck, i think its good for hl2 as a game singleplayer and cs source 16 player servers, not for 32 tho.

The culprit (for me anyways) appears to be anti-aliasing. When AA is turned off there is no shimmering at all. However, the stronger the AA applied the stronger the shimmering gets. If I use 8xSAA I get horrible shimmering.

My settings are as follows:
66.81 Drivers
High Quality
Force Mipmaps - Trilinear
VSync - On
Conformant Texture Clamp - On
AF Opts - Off

It's shame I just dropped $400 on a video card and can't even utilize the features that was my main buying point, AA+AF at high resolution. Needless to say I'm very dissappointed with nV right now, after all the trashing I gave ATi and their crummy drivers my return to Nv hasn't been a pleasant one.

I get no flicker on any of the tests. Except when I ran two instances of maxitest. I'm running the 66.81s.

As I said before you need to run multple instances of the minitest.bat to see the flicker. The maxitest is more obvious. I think this is due to a heavy load on the gfx compared to the minitest. The minitest is pretty simple to debug. Just about 100-200 gl calls between each swap.

NVidia is looking at this right now. 70.41 also flickers...
