I'm hearing DDR2 is not performing so well vs DDR and yet the price hit is pretty huge. Anyone have any reviews or opinions on this is DDR2 worth the price right? Would normal DDR be significatly slower in the new nForce4 mobos or would DDR2 be worth it?

Any advice appreciatedm thanks...

My opinion is that DDR2 will not offer any performance gain until they can get the latency down. The problem with having two different memory specs out is that demand is now split, and prices will rise until mainstream memory consolidates around DDR2 in 2005 :-/.

DDR2 advantage is its capable of ramping up to much higher MHZ, while reducing power consumption and heat compared to DDR. As long as they keep DDR2's latency in check, DDR2 will pull away from DDR when the MHZ rise.

IOW, the design plan for DDR2 is overall faster speed thru MHZ.

But for now, its about they are about the same in overall performance.

All new tech/standards always cost more at first, then drop when production ramps up and it becomes mainstream.

The P4 platform has gone DDR2 cause it is gaining on pure bandwidth increases, while the extra latancy is compensated by the bandwidth..
The AMD64 platform is more latancy dependant then P4, DDR2 in its current highlatancy form would prolly negate whats won with the Integrated lowlatancy memcontroller..
So its not in a rush to switch over just yet..
