View Full Version : Am I the only one that feels this way...

A year ago I was extremely hyped about Half-Life 2. I was sorely disappointed when I found out about the delay and how Valve had lied about the game almost being finished. Several months later Doom 3 went gold and it was also another game I was anticipating just as much as HL2. The reviews showed it to be a great game and I couldnt wait to buy it. I drove 80 miles to buy the game the day it was released and was so disappointed I havent played it again since the first week I bought it. It was probably the biggest disappointment I've had in the gaming industry in a while. Then I heard about HL2 going gold and once again great reviews started poping up. As much as I want to get excited about it, I really can't. Its like all the energy was sucked out of me. I want to feel excited about it being released, but I just cant :(.

Uhh, PC Gamer gave HL2 98%. Now that's the highest score ever. Even they admitted that Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri before did not deserve 98% and that Billy was just on crack (pun intended). It's pretty much IMPOSSIBLE for it to be bad (I think). I've put my whole faith in PC Gamer. :retard:
I'm too rather skeptical of HL2, but... I've been playing CS:Source and made a few connections with all the HL2 videos floating around. In CSS firefights are very juicy, a lot of sparks when bullets hit metal surface, player animation, physics. All the elements that make CSS fun, seem to be present in HL2 videos. So I figured, as long as they can make the game on par with HL, with all those cool effects, I'll be pleased.

Low expectations are good, I wouldn't worry about not getting excited at all.

if nothing else, you will be able to amuse yourself by throwing things around with the gravity gun :)
Maybe this will make you feel better... entirely in german, but nice screenies :)
Another thing... just watching (and listening) to this countdown made me pretty excited :)

Yeah man, low expecations yeild better results! Nothing wrong with a little pessimism now and then :)
I have to admit though, I was in your shoes not too long ago...until HL2 went gold. Now I'm giddier than a cheerleader who's about to go down on the football team. I really believe that this game will kick ass.

you drove 80 miles to buy the game? man, thats just sad... i dont think it was the media hype so much as it was your own (over)expectation that lead to your disappointment. i was pretty excited both times too, but i didnt actually go to those lengths to set myself up for a letdown. no wonder youre bummed! LOL.

I'm more excited now because I found out I have 5 sick days I can use before the end of the year. :D

I had been following Doom 3's production 2 year prior to it's release. Not only did I take a day off from school just to be down at the mall at 9 AM, but I spent a whole week trying to enjoy it. I loved it. I liked it so much because I love scary stuff. Some parts were pretty creepy but overall, the game was really enjoyable. Once SP and MP wore out, I started played FarCry again, waiting for something to happen with HL2. Once it went gold, I played Doom 3 again. I forgot where everything was and what was going to happen so I had a pretty good time playing it. Doom 3 isn't a BAD game, it just lacks replay value. I know it sounds like I'm contradicting myself but seeing other gamers with the same response, replay value is the problem.
HL2 is going to be a different story. With HL2, it's going to have more of a action packed game feel to it. One thing that I cannot wait for and look forward to is the gravity gun and physics puzzles. Even with the gravity gun alone there are many possibilities to defeat your enemies in gunfights. "Should I take the water heater to block gunfire? Or should I take this (______) to throw at my enemies?" Man I can't wait!!!

Bang on the head six_storm. Doom 3 is just not a pleasant game to play again. It's a great movie like ride one time through but I just couldn't get into again. Pity really.

I agree - Doom3 was fun for a once through but forget it as far as replay value goes.

Like HL2 will have a different replay value, hell no it will be just 1 ending and nothing else to do the second time well perhaps completing it at higher difficulty level.

The ending doesn't matter. The reply value lies in the means you use to get there. There will be several ways to complete your objectives: stealth, run and gun, gravity gun, whatever. And let's not forget the amount of exploration that should be available. I'm going to spend a whole lot of time just going around the world without a particular goal in mind.
