Indian cultural conservatives targeted wireless providers yesterday, claiming short message service technology was a major cause of divorce in the country. India's National Human Rights Council staged protest in the capital, New Delhi, according to news agency AFP, where they burned a cellular telephone. The group's leader, Subhash Gupta claimed that the SMS sub culture ran counter to Indian norms of etiquette, sparked marital discord and were diverting Indian youth towards other Western trends, such as dating.

Admittedly some cell phone users are abnoxious (such as those taking phone calls in the movies who will not take the call outside as they interupt everyone's show), but still... Perhaps it isn't the cell phone; but rather people are becomming less then satisfied with the pre-arranged partner who they were supposed to spend the rest of their life with, without knowing anything about them... Further, many in India moving to dating is a trend I had heard about over 10 years ago.

Perhaps if these social conservatives and the Christian right in the US and other countries can get over doctrinal disagreement likely occur; they should join forces. The moral majority could tell them how to enhance campaigns against the cell phone, and they in turn could tell them how to enhance campaigns against video games. With some slight cultural differences, they really are 2 peas in a pod. :p Gawd help us all.

Cell phones have been blamed for brain tumours and lukemia, may aswell blame them for everything else too.

I keep it simple - cell phones are car accidents waiting to happen .

and brain tumors appearing right where people hold cell phones next to their head is a coincidence?

Woah, the "SMS sub culture"!

I propose to send highly trained bounty hunters to kill every SMS user. So, what do you think? :D

Probably so and even if it weren't a statistical correlation does not establish cause and affect. There are many ways to interpret the data for example:

Remote communities where nobody uses cell phones (e.g. Deadhorse, Alaska) have lower rates of brain tumors than communities where cell phone usage is high.

From that someone can erroneously conclude that cell phones cause cancer.

However, you can just as easily point out that Deadhorse, Alaska is a very remote location, miles away from the nearest power plant, factory, automobile or modern civilization in any shape or form. So their environment is free from polution, low level ozone, CFCs, factory polutants etc and its that which explains the lower levels of cancer in remote communities.

Here is a better example:

It used to be believed that alchohol was a fertility drug. The statistics "proved it" they said, since the statistics showed a relationship between women who drink, and women who get pregnant. In truth alchohol does not increase fertility, its just that women who get drunk are more likely get "accidentally" knocked up.

This thing in India is another example of people misunderstanding statistics. They probably found a statistical correlation between women who carry cell phones and women who get divorced. From that they conclude that cell phones cause divorce. I really doubt this is true. More likely is that women who are more independant in nature happen to be more likely to buy a cell phone, and such women are more likely to get a divorce in an unhappy marriage, compared to say, the tradition quiet wife who stays home all day and has no need of a cell phone.

Same here in the States, in New York its illegal and in some counties here in Jersey it is too. It will probably become state law soon enough, and I say good. I'm scared of those soccer moms driving their huge SUV's with a cell phone to their ear, because it there was an accident, I'd be the one dead.

That's what I tell my girlfriend when she tries to have a conversation with me in the car. I'm like "Hey, I'm trying to drive, so shut up for a while, will ya?!" And then I turn up the stereo so I can sing along, because I really love to do that. ;)

Oh, and I thought the leading cause for divorce was marriage... ;) Seriously though, people get married far too early in life, or just too soon in a relationship, and/or for the wrong reasons, so it's not surprising that people get divorced so often.

Yakking on a cell while driving his illegal here, too, but it isn't enforced. The cops here really won't do much about it. Apparently they're too busy trying to find the other types of terrorists...;)

DaveW,

although studies have been either inconclusive or possibly negative, how much of a coincidence is it that people have gotten brain tumors on the same side of their head where they hold cell phones, at the same place.

you are providing examples where the effect is true, and the cause is in question. however, that is not the question here, the question is if there is any cause-effect relationship at all.

statistics aside, i'm making judgments solely on the fact of the area where cancer develops. i don't believe that cell phones are a major variable of cancer, but i do believe that they contribute. ie, the people who got brain tumors were probably more at risk of contracting cancer than most other people in the first place.

Clods like to have cell phone conversations in the movie house, the can, and everywhere possible. http://home.earthlink.net/~sbp777/smilies/cussing.gif
wth are they yapping on and on about? Is it so important it can't wait? Nope. Then it just doesn't happen once-it happens again. Must be some status deal in trying to show off.
I don't even use a regular phone that much.

Wish I could remember the link to the paper. I saw a paper on how cellular usage caused calcium ions in brain tissue to not be used after a normal fashion. This was with very slight exposure to 800MHz cellphone radiation over a period of a few days. The alarming part was that calcium ion utilization did not reduce, or go back to normal after the cellphone radiation was halted.
Cancercellphones, perhaps?

The cause for divorce? That they do not and did not really love each other..
