View Full Version : Low frames running HDR w/ the 1.3 Far Cry patch? Try this!

Hi guys,

Yesterday we all got the 1.3 patch, whoo-hoo. As soon as I loaded it I noticed 2 things, 1.) HDR really looks beautiful and makes the game even better looking than before 2.) This beauty came at the cost of frames....alot of them. Inside I was averaging 21-37 fps. And outside went as low as 13-28 fps. That's unplayable to me. ( This was @ 1280X960 no aa/af)

First I un-installed the 1.3, 1.2 and 1.1 patches, then I re-installed the game itself, and went directly to the 1.3 patch-this gave me about 2-5fps gains....still not enough for playable frames, then I started going through drivers and this is where the difference came in. For the heck of it, I tried the new beta 70.41 drivers...well :drooling: :drooling: :drooling: Anyone getting low frames ought to give these drivers a shot, I went from 21-37 fps inside to 32-78fps and outside I went from 13-28fps to now 28-50 fps. My frames doubled with this new set of drivers! I'm really picky about I.Q and am happy to say I saw no loss of I.Q with this set. They may be buggy in certain games, all i've tried is FarCry. Def. worth the download though. And mind you, these new improved scores are on a 6800 GT @ stock. ( Still running 1280X960) Goodluck. Hope these drivers work for you as much as they did for me :drooling:

Eh...I had bad experiences with the 65.73 betas...I'd rather not use anymore betas.

We don't wanna hear you complaining about bad FPS in far cry @ HDR then :p

I'm gonna check this out; if it turns out to have a negative impact, the 10 minuttes was well spend anyway... Thanks for the heads up ultimate, hope it works ;)

for hdr best quality, use \r_hdrrendering 7
for hdr best performance, use \r_hdrrendering 2

YOu guys should also enable normal map compression. Seems to increase IQ a bit as well.

does it do that "initial loading" i read in the patch notes every time you start the game, or just the first time you enable it and then never again?

I have the command attached to my Far Cry shortcut so it's enabled everytime I load the game. It doesn't affect the game much. Maybe the loading between levels is a bit longer, but not much.

I did a small IQ comparison in the sticky Far Cry 1.3 thread. ;)

so have the 70.41's helped anyone else?

Going to try them in a little while... I wasn't getting bad frame rates before... but if they improve then it is even better :).

I bought a new 21" LCD at the weekend so I could play FarCry at 1600x1200 to get the most out of my card, I was gutted when I installed Patch 1.3 and enabled HDR(7) and it played like a dog!... Was averaging around 25FPS inside (at the start in the cave)

Anyway, I removed my old driver using driver cleaner 3 (driverheaven.org) and installed 70.41 - I set HDR to 2 and ran it and it was a lot better averaging around 40FPS (again at the start in the cave) - I then added "r_TexNormalMapCompressed 1" after FarCry.exe on the shortcut and was amazed by the result!

The loading of levels takes a noticable amount longer but I'm now averaging around 50FPS in the cave at the begining. It plays like a dream and there is no mouse lag at all (I found I got mouse lag at FPS's around 30)

Using 70.41 drivers, HDR(2) and turning normal map compression on makes one hell of a performance increase, I can finally run the game at 1600x1200 with HDR on at extremely playable frame rates.

I think HDR set to 2 is perfect as 7 is a bit over the top.

I'm running a 6800 Ultra at 448/1200 on an Athlon64 3400+ with 1Gb of RAM.

70.41 did the trick for me, thanks for the tip.

glad to see it's helping people =)

I demand this become a sticky lol, being that so many people keep complaing about hdr performance =P

My results using Fraps benchmark. I loaded from the 3rd(?) checkpoint right before the binocular cabin, and ran back toward the little dock, down the path, left of first building, right of wrecked boat, firing off one magazine of the M-4 on the way, then across and jumping off the dock, swimming around to the right and back on shore, stopping right at the entrance of the dock. Running always, never walking or stopping. Just in case someone wants to duplicate it.

FarCry 1.3, 1024x768x32, Very High settings with "Antisotropic Filtering Level = 2"
"r_TexNormalMapCompressed 1" in the shortcut target field and these HDR settings in the Sytem.cfg:
r_HDRBrightOffset = "8.000000"
r_HDRBrightThreshold = "6.000000"
r_HDRLevel = "0.400000"
r_HDRRendering = "2"

Driver version:
2004-10-27 22:27:06 - FarCry
Frames: 1401 - Time: 39327ms - Avg: 35.624 - Min: 26 - Max: 45

Driver version:
2004-10-27 22:41:04 - FarCry
Frames: 1486 - Time: 38819ms - Avg: 38.280 - Min: 25 - Max: 61

Not a huge difference, or a real scientific benchmark, but it looks to give a little boost.

Great but why is the min still low?

Because Far Cry is a pig and there is a lot of time spent with low FPS?
