Strangest computer problem ever...

You know when you first turn on your computer how your optical drives make an initialization noise and the busy light comes one for a brief second. Happens during the POST. Well recently rolling my mouse wheel on some web pages, in Internet explorer causes my DVD burner to do just that. It makes that initialization noise, and the bust light comes on with ever click of the mouse wheel. If I browse the same page in firefox, there is no problem. The pages aren’t anything bad. Even some pages on nvnews will do it. I do not have a virus or spyware on my computer, and everything else in my computer seems to be working fine. Has anyone seen this issue. Or better still figured out what it is and how to fix it? My mouse is an MS intelli mouse. Running windows XP SP2. *shrugz* so odd, and it’s driving me up the wall.

how do you know you don't have a virus or spyware? Sounds like a spyware thing to me. Download Spybot here (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) . Works great.

Do you happend to have a cd or dvd in the drive when you notice this?

My mouse wheel does some crazy things some times too. This has only happened to me probably 5-6 times EVER, but some times when I turn on the computer scrolling the mouse wheel doesnt do anything in windows, and in IE it will change the text size :|

I can scroll up and go to medium, large, very large... or scroll down... small, very small... its really really wierd. It will go away after a while, or I can just restart.

Probably not the same thing you are having, but I have always used Logitech Mice (2nd Gen Optical and now MX500).

When you hold down CTRL and scroll the wheel, that will change text size (Intentionally). You probably had a stuck key or laid something on it.

Maybe something was sitting on my left ctrl key... thats so wierd, I figured I would have noticed something like that.

Works great.I feel confident enough using my PC that I never use virus software and feel safe. Just for the heck of it I loaded Norton, and Adaware. No virus were found, and the only spyware found were cookies. As I suspected.

There is nothing in the drive.

I changed my win ASPI drives back to default >> problem still present
I removed all startup items >> problem still present
I rolled back my IDE drives >> problem still present
I changed my DVD firmware to several different versions >> problem still present
I Changed the master/slave settings on my optical drives >> problem still present
I changed the optical drives back to a 40 pin IDE cable >> problem fixed

I was having problems with my burners not to long ago and the issue then ended up being my ASPI drives. The Nero knowledge base said a 80 pin cable would fix the error I was getting (it didn’t). But I didn’t see any harm in leaving my optical drives hooked to an 80 pin IDE cable, so I left it in my computer.
