i played it at a friends house for 30 minutes....it was all I could take. Mind you, I'm really not a big console guy anymore...( loved snes, saturn,n64,psone and DC...after that systems have gone to sh*t imo) I seem to be biased toward pc games, but I gave this a shot.

I didn't like the controls-this isnt really fault of the developer, I'm just so used to a keyboard and mouse with shooters...I just couldn't get used to it! I wished microsoft would have allowed for both to be made for xbox-even if they do it tomorrow...it's too little too late....huge reason I skipped so many xbox shiooters.

The sounds were pretty cheesy too....maybe their meant to be....I dunno, but it takes away from the dramatics of the game " ouch that hurts "

The graphics seemed like a step backward....maybe i'm just used to high res pc games...but to me, even metroid prime for gamecube looked better than this. Makes me wonder if Metroid echoes will be the best looking console game of 04.

Fun Factor was lame too. Is it me, or does it feel like halo 2 is really the first halo mixed up by a bad mod team and thrown together.

Just my opinion from a pc gamer. I was looking forward to this game....I enjoyed the first one on xbox and later on pc, but this one didnt do anything for me. Maybe I needed to play it longer, but I really didn't have the urge to.

Yeah, I'm pretty jaded too. My wife bought a copy (she's a admin for team compete forums), and I tried it but it just didn't hold my interest. The vehicles are interesting, but it just seemed like a halo mod or UT2k4 with bad graphics :angel2:

I was hoping for 1080i hdtv mode or something with hmore revolutionary gameplay.

I don't get overhyped about games anymore, so I'm loving it. I'm at the second to last mission, and I gotta say, this game is a LOT better than Halo 1. Sorry you didn't like it, but then again, you only played it for a few minutes and went in assuming you wouldn't like it, so...

Graphically, this game is a lot better than UT2K4. Of course, if you only played it for a few minutes, you wouldn't notice that. If you feel otherwise, rest assured, there is something wrong with you. Seek medical attention.

The sound is superb, I don't really understand how you can say it isn't. The production values in this game far surpass most PC games.

The multiplayer is spectacular as well (if a little frustrating). Having a lot of fun with that, too - and there's barely any lag! It's good fun.

Of course, there will always be contrarians trying to spoil the fun. Oh well, I feel bad for you, you're really missing out.

Yeah, the graphics are extremely good for xbox :D Sound is amazing, and the gameplay just plain rocks.

they ruined co-op!! instead of being able to respawn your teammate when you're not near enemies.. its like single player mode where you respawn at a checkpoint when you die. after spending 4.5 hours on legendary on one part on the first level with my roommate, its safe to say im really ****ing pissed off that they changed this.. co-op simply isn't fun anymore.

They did that so people wouldn't be able to "leap-frog" through the levels. A good change, IMO.

POSSIBLE SPOILER

After standing outside of FYE until midnight with a bunch of friends impatiently awaiting it's release I have to say it was well worth it. Halo 2 is, imo, an absolutely awesome game.
I have to say I am NOT disappointed. I think that everything I've seen thus far is superb, and really enjoy the look, feel, and sound (dolby digital 5.1 goodness :D). And being able to play the Covenant during the campaign adds a new dimension to the game. The ability to carry dual weapons is a very welcome feature that has done me a lot of good, and finally being able to use the energy sword just makes close combat with Elites that much better. Though I've heard complaints of the in-engine cut-scenes I have to say I have enjoyed them myself. The story line I also like this time around much more than I did Halo.

My game rating 1 - 10: 10

SPOILER ALERT

Yeah, maybe add a spoiler alert to that. Some people might not appreciate that since it wasn't common knowledge. But yeah it's badass that you get to use a Covenant guy, he's a ton of fun. Stealth and run in slashing away with the Energy Sword! Ahh, fun.

Well, I'm certainly enjoying it so far, but my PC snob mentality does detract from the excitement somewhat (although with an XP2500 + 64 meg 4200, it's not like I'm a high-class PC snob. :)). For games like this which involve a lot of long draw distances and small objects, 640*480 really, really sucks. It's not a problem in fighting games or other games where you're up and close to the main characters, but I keep finding myself instinctively inching towards my 32" Svideo Toshiba, only to discover that nope - distance isn't the problem, it's resolution. When you're used to putting your face 6 " from a 19" monitor at 1280*1024 - and inching closer when say, you're trying to draw a bead on Nazi scum in COD, it can be frustrating. Combine that with an aggressive LOD system where some detail will only present itself when you're right on top of it, and I'm having to walk over some objects just to see if it's what I'm looking for (such as similar-sized weapons).

30fps is largely constant though, there are a few drops but they're isolated and brief (so far, I believe I'm only on the 4th/5th mission). It's..."ok", although 60fps would be much nicer, especially when you're aiming with a joypad. So far, performance isn't nearly bothering me much as the limited resolution though, so it's more of a minor gripe.

Can't say I'm terribly surprised that those great stencil-shadow laden shots Bungie were distributing up until this point were all from cutscenes. While some fanboys were gushing over them and proclaiming Halo2 will beat Doom3 in that department, I kept wondering why every shot I saw looked like an in-engine cutscene, and would the game have that detail throughout? Well, that's been answered obviously. No doubt, Halo2 still looks very, very good in-game and Bungie have made the best looking FPS on the Xbox (taking into account Chronicles of Riddick looked better, but the levels were nowhere near the scope of these), but the marketing hype was a little disingenuous when they're presenting non-interfactive cutscenes - and ones that have been aggressively downsized from development box shots at super high-res. That being said, I support Bungie's decision to use in-engine cut scenes with every graphical effect turned up to the max, while it does create some disparity with characters in actual gameplay, it's likely still less than if they used pre-rendered graphics. Huzzah for Bungie's art directors and programmers, boo to their marketing department.

Ok, that ends the technical whining. How about the gameplay? Well, I'm looking forward to getting home and continuing it tonight - something I haven't done since the original Half Life or Call of Duty. This FPS has probably come closer to any other in delivering a cinematic "blockbuster" type experience - for what it's worth. I'm even liking the humour in Halo2 - especially now with David Cross as the voice of one of your grunts. :) Games that take themselves too seriously and don't deliver are just painful to watch, Halo thankfully doesn't take that route.

The gameplay additions seem small at first, but they really add up. Dual wielding weapons is always a tactical concern as you can't throw grenades, and as soon as you switch to a single weapon, you lose one of your dualies. That's a little frustrating, but it does give an added element to enemy encounters.

AI didn't really need improving, but it has. Heck, I'm on normal difficulty so I'm probably not seeing the best of it. The ability to be the gunner now in your warthog is fantastic, and the AI drivers aren't that bad considering they have to take care of you and just can't barrel towards your destination. They're rolled the 'hog a few times, but pretty damn good considering what it has to deal with.

The bridge scene in Mombasa was fantastic. My rear was getting lit up by a banshee, so I started to rotate my cannon...but before I could get a bead on it, it exploded. Wah? Without even noticing, marines had boarded my assault tank, and one had a rocket launcher and took it out. Sweet! They fire rockets! They snipe! They can drive!

And damn, the Covenant are more aggressive now. They'll leap over objects to get at your hiding spots, took me by surprise when that happened.

I'm just midway through the first Covenant level - I like this perspective change. Overall, the story is really pulling me in so far, in fact the only one gripe I have with it was how the MC got rid of that battle cruiser in the first level. I mean come on, he's a genetically enhanced super-soldier, not a superhero! "Riding" a bomb through space, planting it on a cruiser after flying through a massive battle unscathed, then jumping off the hull, and soaring to safety, even though the explosion just destroyed a ship that would take you hours to glide over? WTF? Did they hire Michael Bay to write that?

All in all, it's a blast - certainly one of the most well developed FPS on any platform in terms of guiding the player through a story.

Shame about the platform though. If it was on the PC, I likely would have called in sick today. :)

LOL, that was kinda my reasoning for calling in sick for Half-Life 2 next week instead of for Halo 2 this week. I gotta say though, I love Halo 2 - tons of fun to play. Definitely better single player than the original.

Actually I have noticed a few areas in-game where they use the same shadow and lighting system as the cutscenes. For example do you remember that one hallway where the marines take up position at the far end to ambush a covenent patrol? If you look you'll notice the lights cast fully dynamic shadows, looked very cool as the elites and grunts were walking by and you could see their own shadows being case on themselves, not to mention the marines later on when they ran through the tunnel with me (well, the ones that survived, at least). But at least not all of the shadowing system was just smoke and mirrors that you only see in cutscenes. It doesn't look as good as it did in the earlier videos though, and it isn't used all that often. I thought Riddick was more impressive too, in fact overall that game seems to be graphically underrated. From a technical aspect I'm *almost* glad Halo 2 is NOT on PC instead of Xbox, I have a feeling if it was developed for PC it would've performed about half as well as Halo 1 did, which basically means anyone with a 9800/fx5900 or lower would be playing the game at 640x480 anyway  . Their LOD system is pretty aggressive, but I'm kinda wishing PC games would give you the option for LOD as well. Does seem pretty wasteful to render all those details on an object that's half a mile away. Particularly Doom 3, by the end of the game I was shooting dead bodies to make them disintigrate just so my framerate was better...

I am very impressed with the AI, as well. Sometimes they can be a bit quirky about getting into vehicles (seems like they intentionally leave it for you until you start to head out), but it's just the greatest thing seeing your allies act independantly of you and actually follow you around using whatever vehicles they can find. On one of the later levels, I had a tank escort me through a large part of the level while I was on-foot because I didn't want to be such a big target, it was cool seeing an enemy come over a hill and then seeing this huge streak fly over my head and blow it to bits :D .

I think I'm almost done with the campaign. It's much shorter than I thought it would be, before when I assumed I had finished 3 levels it turns out I had finished 6. Oh well, at least it's been pretty enjoyable so far, although I can tell that they're building to a cliffhanger...

There are a lot of texture problems in the game. I am sure you guys noticed them. The game is slow to reacting and thus the textures are not there for a split second. It is annoying but the game play is fun and the multi play is so much better than the original, though we need content to down load soon since there isn't that many maps.

Edge
11-10-04, 12:49 PM
Yeah, it seems that their data streaming system is a little bit slow on the textures. The good news is that this means there's no more than one or two seconds of loading time ever (except for the initial startup), but it does seem to have a few quirks with it. Oh well, it's fairly minor, and almost never happens during normal gameplay (mainly just cutscenes).

Im glad im not the only one with the slow textures. Dam i want AA for this game.

How do you highjack vehicles in SP? I had to wait in line for an hour and a half to get the game, but damn it was worth it.

Edge
11-10-04, 02:54 PM
Hijacking is done pretty much just like boarding them if they're empty: hold down X when it's not moving very fast and you'll get on it. In single-player you also have to hit B to knock the guy off the vehicle. Oh, and against a tank you can knock open the back panel and throw a grenade in to destroy the vehicle.

Probably. Heroic in H2 is supposed to be as hard as Legendary on the original.

I finished the game this afternoon - about 15 hours of play, all told, and I love it. I'm going to start in on Heroic tomorrow sometime, though I may not be able to pull myself away from multiplayer. I love the stat tracking options. I've played four or five games already and none of them have been in the slightest bit laggy (though I have learned that my Slayer skills definitely need a polish). For some reason, there are a lot of people on Bungie.net's forums pissing and moaning about slow group connect times, and other stuff. Screw them. :) Bungie's going to be actively supporting H2 MP, so I wouldn't be surprised if they updated it regularly in addition to more MP maps.

First thing's first, though - gotta check out the Bonus DVD. :D

Finished the game on Normal and am now trying it on Legendary. My God is that hard! I'm on the first level and in the second hangar, and am stucking facing down EIGHT Elite's, and it's almost impossible. If I could only get more Plasma Grenades. Legendary is a step above. If I can beat the game on Legendary no one will be able to touch me in multiplayer :P.

I've played four or five games already

4 to be exact, your team won 2 of the 3 team games you played, and then you played one Slayer match. ;)

Single-console coop only, no System Link or Live coop.
