You should get the Leadtek 6800 GT for your son. It comes with a good game bundle and good cooler on it (and quiet). The MSI card also has a good bundle and good cooler. Look into those two.

BFG 6800GT OC (avail at Best Buy & Fry's) - core comes 20mhz faster than other 6800GT cards & has lifetime warranty.

The XFX 6800GT is known to be a good card, and if your son is old enough it comes bundled with Doom 3 included.

BFG or XFX are supposedly the best, but I would ultimately go with BFG because you get a small safe overclock out of the box and a lifetime warranty, you can't beat that.

PNY is the best. All the cards that i own are pny, OC-able EASY W/COOLBITS but support service sucks alot so if you pny, buy it in a store like FRY,S never on the net with a 15 day return full refund, and at FRY,S you can get performance granttee for a little more, best place to shop, and that,s the real deal

If you want out of the box performance, you can get the Gainward 6800 GT Golden Sample which runs at 400/1100 (as fast as Ultra, as cheap as GT). You can't beat that. But, it doesn't come bundled with anything. Again, this is why I'm not recommending the BFG or the PNY or the others. They don't really come bundled with any games, and the cooler on the BFG one sucks.

Wouldn't you want your son to get some free PC games with your expensive video card? The XFX 6800 GT comes with Doom3, the MSI 6800GT comes with Prince of Persia:Sands of Time, URU:Ages Beyond Myst and XIII. The Leadtek 6800GT comes with PoP:Sands of Time, and Splinter Cell 2 Pandora Tommorow and *some* BFG 6800 GT come with Doom3 (but not all, and usually more expensive). This is why I would get either the Leadtek, the MSI, the XFX or if you can find the BFG w/ Doom3 for a good price, then maybe that then. If you want out of the box performance, the Gainward GS is the one guaranteed the highest, and the Gainward and the Leadtek have the best coolers.

Actually I don't know what all this bitching is about on the new BFG cooler.

It works fine. I don't have a problem with it. Never had a problem with it yet.

I didn't go Gainward or any cheaper made product due in part to shoddy construction (crappy solder job/ inferior electronic components. (Cheap capacitors that burst.)

If want out of box speed, then by all means get the Gainward. You will ahve to use there expert tool to get it to 400.

But if you want a quality card, with awesome support, head on down to your Local Best Buy store and pick up a BFG 6800 GT OC. It might not be @ 400/1100, but its already shown in benchmarks that the difference is only 5-7 fps.

There are no games unless you buy the bundle, but this is in part a tradeoff for better support and a better warranty. No other company offers this level of service, accept for Visiontek but they are making ATi cards now.

My vote is for the Gainward Golden Sample 6800GT, also. This is an awsome card. I keep mine overclocked at 400/1100 but coolbits auto-detect comes up with 443/1170 so that gives you an idea about how stable this card is.

The GS sounds good also. Would you happen to know a good place to purchase from.
Still kinda leaning towards the BFG tho. Definitely seems to be a good quality product.

I got mine from http://www.globalcomputinginc.com/index.asp . You can try ZipZoomFly, too.

The GS doesn't come at 400/1100 out of the box does it? You'd still have to overclock I believe (I'm just getting into technicalities here though, the GS is guaranteed to run at 400/1100). The BFG on the other hand is overclocked from the BIOS, no manual overclocking or special software required.

The GS comes with ExperTool, which lets you chose "Safe Mode" - 350/1100 or "EnhancedMode" - 400/1100. Also allows you to control the fan speed.

Totaly the Best Repley you have had. :P

And the Cooler on the BFG is fine. Unless you wanna overclock the card, which then maybe you wanna get a Silencer NV5 anyway.

Kinda conservative when it comes to overclocking. Running my 6800u@ 425/1100.

Kewl 425/1100 that is stock BFG 6800 Ultra OC speeds.

I wish I could have found a BFG 6800 Ultra OC to buy. I could not find one in stock. So I purchased the GT.
